Hello,

A little over a week ago, my 7 year old Alaskan Malamute, Aurora, started to limp a bit. It got better after a few days then much worse. We took her to the vet two days ago and the first thing the vet said was, "BONE CANCER." I was surprised at how quickly she stated that. Aurora had an X-ray which showed some cloudiness her right front shoulder. It was sent for a second opinion and that radiologist didn't immediately say, "CANCER," but did say it is questionable. She has a little swelling in her wrist on that leg as well. They said to follow up with another X-ray in 2 weeks.

Since the vet visit, she has been on pain meds and anti-inflammatories. She is not doing much better. She will get up, but she clearly doesn't like to. It is a toss up when she goes outside as to whether she doesn't want to walk or tries to walk a little further. We are trying to limit all walking. Last night, her wrist/leg gave out and she fell face first (not an uncommon occurrence for the little klutz, but still very upsetting.)

Any opinions or experiences are very welcomed. The word cancer is so scary and the more I read online, the less comfortable I feel.

Hi Aurora and family, welcome to the club nopawdy wants to join. Your future posts will automatically appear, sorry for the delay in approving your first.

Well, first of all, you're not alone as you can tell. Cancer IS a scary thing but please don't feel hopeless; even if it is, know that many dogs here have beat the odds and lived far past expectations. So keep that in your heart for now.

I'm glad you got a second opinion. But two weeks is a LONG time to wait when you're talking about a possible cancer diagnosis especially if the meds aren't helping her. She does sound like she's in pain. I would request a needle aspiration asap to find out what this could be. It's a non-invasive, in-office procedure with a local anesthetic. If they won't give you one, go elsewhere. The best thing you can do for her now is to be a good advocate and go with your gut feeling. I can tell you know how to do that!

Hugs to both of you, we are here to help. Jump into the chat room if you'd like, especially during evenings, you'll usually find folks there.

I agree with Jerry, two weeks seems a long time to wait. I know when they say the "c" word, it is really scary but remember its not a death sentence. Many dogs do very well. We are here for you and Aurora!

Sorry you and Aurora are going through this. You could not be with a more supportive groupof people who nderstand far better than others can. And we understand the lengths you are willing to go to to give Auroa a pain free life of quality for as long as possible!! And that is a glotious gift!

My Hapy Hannah and I just celelbrated her ONE YEAR AMPUVERSARY and moving forward (knockn wood)! The gift of quality time for more loving, more tummy rubs, more treats, more tail wags, more sobbery kisses, more snuggle and more spoling thany you ever imagined possible...WOW!! A glorious gift!!
Recovery for the first two weeks or so...ugh! No picnic! Scarey! But once the sparkle starts coming back...once you see how breat she feels when that horrible bone pain is gone, you will be so happy!

Stay connected to us, research here and let us know how we can help you. Take lots of lots of pictures and videos! We LOVE those around herez,

Sending you love and support.

Does anyone know how much a needle aspiration cost?

Aurora seems to be doing a little better. I assume it's from the pain meds, but at least it's something.

Glad she's doing better. Costs vary by location and type of clinic. It could be $50 or it could be $100 or more, really can't say. What's important is to do it soon.
