Hi everyone, not sure if anyone on here will remember me. Its been almost a year and a half since I joined this site. I have a Leonberger named Meeko who was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma 9-16-12. His rear right leg was amputated 10-1-12, so he has been a tripawd for 17 months now. Shortly after his recovery and physical therapy, I went through several life-changing events that pulled me away from many social networks. I'm in a much better and happier place now and have been re-engaging in my circle of dog friends, getting back in touch with old friends and making new. I wanted to post an update here on the forums to tell everyone how well Meeko is doing. Not only has he been cancer free for almost a year and a half, but he has accomplished quite a bit since losing a leg in the fight against cancer. First, going back to his initial recovery, he went for 2 months of hydrotherapy to build muscle and balance on three legs. He also did an at-home physical therapy program wherein I did stretches and balance-building exercises with him. He finished physical therapy Spring of 2013 and enjoyed Summer of 2013 as a happy and healthy dog. All the while, we continued to volunteer as a pet therapy team visiting those with developmental disabilities. Throughout Fall of 2013, Meeko and I finished logging our first 50 pet therapy visits which enabled us to submit our paperwork for his Therapy Dog titles. Meeko has earned his:

  • Therapy Dog Trrrrific Award (awarded by Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs)
  • Leonberger Therapy Award - LTA (awarded by the Leonberger Club of America)
  • and his Therapy Dog Title - ThD (awarded by the American Kennel Club)

He is now officially Noble Lowen's Because You Loved Me CGC ThD LTA. It is now March of 2014 and on March 16th, it will be 18 months post-diagnosis. April 1st will be his year and a half ampuversary. Meeko is 4.5 years old and thriving on three legs. He has formed an incredible bond with my boyfriend, Vinny, which I think really adds to his happiness. He goes for walks, he runs, he plays with other dogs at the dog park, he does steps, he jumps and romps. He has taught us all many valuable lessons. I am getting choked up as I type about his story.

In 6 weeks, we will be traveling to Burlington, Vermont for the 2014 Leonberger Club of America National Specialty. Meeko will be officially receiving his Leonberger Therapy Award "in-person" and that will be an honor. In addition, he will be pioneering the venue of draft work/carting as the first tripawd to participate in a sanctioned draft test. For those unfamiliar with draft work, it is the work of a dog with a cart or wagon, being hitched via a harness. The dog pulls the cart and navigates a course with left and right turns, stops, distractions, varying terrain, etc. Meeko is also in the process of learning how to "back-up" while hitched to the cart, and this is proving to be quite difficult for a rear amp giant breed.

I'm so glad to be on this forum typing this update. I hope to re-engage with members here to share my experiences with my tripawd warrior.

Our tripawd is Meeko. Four and a half year old male Leonberger. Certified therapy dog with his CGC. Diagnosed with grade 1 chondrosarcoma 9-16-12. Right rear leg amputated 10-1-12. We also had Casper who was an 8 year old Great Pyrenees diagnosed with osteosarcoma. We sent him to the Rainbow Bridge 10-29-11.

Way to go, Meeko! You and Murphy became rear amp Tripawds in the same month. While our Murph will never make a cart dog, he does back up almost as well as he goes forward. He and our quadpawd Golden play tug of war, and Murphy drags poor Gus all over the yard.

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Very impressive Meeko!  Congrats and keep kickin' cancers butt.

Amy & Libby

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

The ironic thing, is that Meeko backs up very well on 3 legs. Even pre-amp, he made us laugh because he would back up at times when it would be easier to just turn around. We joked that his best gear is reverse, and not drive! LOL

Here are some pics of Meeko post-amp:

Murphy does that same backing up thing. He gets between the couch and the coffee table and backs out instead of going forward. It is the strangest thing. Glad he isn't alone in this.

BTW, I lied when I said Murphy would never be a cart dog. See my post under Hopping Around. I guess one should never say never.

Meeko is absolutely gorgeous. I had never even heard of a Leonberger until I came to this site. So glad I have now.

Thanks, Kathi. I think its pretty awesome that Murphy is joining the group of dogs that pull things! Your video showed Murphy's willingness to succeed.

Back to the backing up thing, I wonder if this is another way for rear amp tripawds to cheat. This is purely speculation but I would think that backing up would require the dog to shift their weight forward to their front in order to lift up their back leg. Whereas, I think to walk forward the dog must shift weight to the back leg. Make sense?

Not sure if it is a cheating thing or just how he likes to do it. He backed out of tight spaces as a quadpawd, too.

I will more than likely be tapping your wisdom as we progress with Murphy's pulling.

That does to me but it's a great question for our rehab therapist who will join us on 3/22!
