We just got these hillarious "doggie porn" photos that Kim took today. Now, does this look like a dog with lung mets? Talk about living for the moment!

Yes, our Mr. Buster does seem to be quite the "ladie's man"!  Wink

Hi Kim & Buster,

If I were you, I'd go to Red Bank.  From some of the things I have heard about U of Penn, I'm not so sure they are the one's you should be talking to at this point.  The Metronomic Protocol was very successful with Jerry and possibly prolonged his life for many more months than if Jim & Rene hadn't tried it.

Here is the same link I just left on Heidi & Titan's page to an article on the Metronomic Protocol.

I, also, wrote some reasons why the protocol can help in cases such as yours because the "cocktail" of drugs given are anti-angiogenic (which means they work by starving tumors of their blood supply).  I hope this will help you to decide what you want to do next for Buster.

Dear Friends,

This will be day 3 of Buster being on the Cytoxan , he had started the Rimadyl with the prognosis about a week ago. As you can gather we did make the trip to Red Bank. I can honestly say, " I am happy we went". It is a very nice hospital. Buster wasn't freaked about going in either and he even made a fur friend. In general a very good vibe.

Now, info I was given about metronomic chemotherapy . It has a less than 20% chance of  helping . So I am monitoring him for any side effects, nausea and diarrhea. If he stops eating, I will stop.

I have also ordered artemisia. I just found a great link about dosage and brands. (I will post under the link ) along  with K-9 immunity .

Buster has never been on chemo before... due to the pathology of the tumor.
I look at Buster several times a day and say," Now lets shrink those tumors". I know now ,I have done everything within my will to slow this down. I have peace in my head and heart.

Thank you for all the wonderful info in the above threads. (It is anit-angiogenic )

Anything else, about this therapy, please let me know. I am also encouraging him to drink a lot more water..

Love,

Kim&Buster

Hi Kim & Buster,

I am sooo sorry that I did not check the site sooner and be there for you the way you have been for me.  You and Buster are in Bonnie's and my prayers.

I am not sure where you live, but there is a holistic vet called "Always Helpful" veterinarian center in Nottingham PA.  They specialize in alternative treatments.  Her web site is: http://www.judi.....emaker.com.   I have not been there, but we met a couple at our specialist, Metropolitan vet, that had a border collie with osteo in the skull or head.  Metropolitan referred them to UPenn.  We saw them there when we took Bonnie in and they told us that UPenn said they could not do anything.  So they went to the holistic vet and are getting good, not great, but better than not good, results.

Here is my email address, isamp@msn.com.  Please feel free to email me any time and I will give you my phone numbers.  I don't know how close we are geographically, but I will help however I can.  Please don't hesitate to call.  You have been there to support me and I would like to return that favor.

Kim, thanks for the update. We've been wondering how things turned out. You definitely sound more relaxed and comfortable with the decision to go there.

Really, we can't think of any bad side effects from the Metronomic protocol, it was such a low dosage of chemo (I was on cytoxan myself). At first my Mom was really freaked out about getting me to go pee a lot. She made me get up and down soooo many times! But then she talked to Dr. Mullins, who told her to relax; the chemo dose is so low, that is doesn't do nearly as much damage to the kidneys as a chemo injection does. So while water intake is always a good thing, getting me to drink loads of water and pee all the time, wasn't so urgent. She said just to make sure I had the pill first thing in the morning, so that it was out of my system completely by the time I went to bed.

Keep us posted on how it goes. We're rooting for you and Buster.

Kim,  I'm glad that Buster was able to start the Metronomic protocol and that you found a dose for Artemisinin .  The main risk from the above drugs would be from the Rimadyl, since NSAIDS can affect the GI tract, liver, and kidneys especially with long-term use.  Most dogs handle these drugs just fine but if he hasn't been on Rimadyl it might be a good idea to check some bloodwork 2-4 weeks after starting in case the dose needs to change or he needs to switch to a different NSAID.

I hope he feels better!

Hi Kim & Buster,

Wow, it's so good to hear that you and Buster like Red Bank.  That is such good news and I'm glad you started the Metronomic Protocol.  I've been doing so much reading on cancer studies and when I read more about this protocol, I thought, gee, it couldn't hurt.  Also, I'm really glad to hear you finally found the artemisinin (artemesia).

I like your positive thinking, saying several times a day to Buster, "Now, let's shrink those tumors!"  You're such a great pawrent and if anyone deserves a break, you and Buster do.

We are sending our prayers in hopes that these new treatments help Buster.

Just an update. I took Buster for walk, however, he doesn't want to go very far. He made it a short distance and had enough. Is this the result of the medication? He doesn't appear to be out of breath.. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi Kim - there are days that Zeus can go for a half hour walk and then there are days that he makes it 20 steps and plops down on the grass. I'm seeing a pattern that on Mondays - he usually doesn't have a lot of energy with my dog walker and that is probably because I'm home on the weekends and we do a few walks a day or play in the yard.

I'm not sure if the medicine that he is on would have any side effects...Pam?

If his breathing is fine...I would not worry too much - he may just be a little pooped out!

Please keep us posted -

Lots of prayers and hugs as always,

Heather

There are good days and bad. We must roll with the punches, but I agree with Zeus, if Buster's breathing is OK when he plops down, he's probably just being a lazy dog ... time to stop and smell the flowers.

Kim and Buster -

We are trying to catch up with posts and are so shocked by Buster's news.  We are happy that you went ahead to Red Bank and started Metronomic Protocol. Barney started on Metronomics immediately following his IV chemotherapy this past summer, and I believe that has contributed to his success thus far.  The docs gave him 6 months, even with chemo, and he is now approaching month # 11.  So, we wish you love, and send support and healing wishes in 2009!

Love,

Barney B and Mom, Linda
