Cora has been in a lot of pain for a few days. She fell about 5 or 6 days ago and was really sore for a few days but then was  doing better, but then she just took a turn for a worse. She's pretty dang miserable. She's been a bit up and down for the last few 4 or 5 months but when she's been sore, it hasn't been like this. And rest has always helped. And meticam has helped. So I don't know if this is some chronic type issue that's built to a level that isn't tolerable or if the fall that happened did something.

So... today I took her to work with me. (I don't know if I told you all I work at a vet office). What stunk is we were slammed so she didn't get x-rays done. That was part of what I wanted to happen. So, I will have to bring her back. Blah. I'm kind of mad about that. The doctor was able to examine her and unlike before when it's been hard to tell where she's hurting, it's very clearly her back hip... on the same side as her front amp. On the side that does not have weakness from the brain damage.

And so, I'll go back in soon and get the x-rays. And also more blood work done because she was an uncooperative butt and squirmed and pulled the needle out, so they didn't get as much blood as they would have liked.  And since she was mad and stressed and she will be sedated for the x-rays we decided to wait.  So, then I'll know.

And yeah, I'm catastrophizing.. because this is Cora and she's already beaten the odds. Because she's been so freaking miserable and I can't fix her. Because it's her leg on the amp and strong side. And I told the doctor I understand that with Cora we are talking about quality of life That's why I want the x-rays and all that because then I'll know where we stand. I won't give up on her but I also can't make her suffer if... she's just got so much stacked against her. She's amazing and fights through everything but at some point it's got to be too much.

Catastrophizing??   Yeah, that may be a notch above "obsessive worrying" or "fearing the worst'. We've  now moved from the "Worry Wart Club" to the "Catastrophizing Club"!  Leave it to Cora!

Okay, deep breaths.....you know the drill.  Usually  things are not nearly as bad as we imagine!

I've  read what you've  written several  times. Bummer thst they couldn't  work her in.  I kmow this "visit" is stressful for her.  It really does seem like a bad tweak of sorts.  Perhaps it continues to get worse with each fall or wrong twist.  Very possibly escalation  of arthritis  or hip dysplasia.   She may need some pain meds to go along with the Metacam and, of course, more rest.

You know we are all cheering for you and Cora!!  We admire your devotion  and dedication  to her well being soooo much!!   You have ALWAYS, and will continue, to do what`s best for Cora .  ❤ You clearly  know her far better than anyone and you know what represents  quality  to Cora better than anyone.

We'll be watching  for your update and sending  lots of pawsitive healing  energy.❤

Wow, that's a pretty big worry. Can I get just a smile if I tell one on me.. I looked at the word "catastrophizing" .. my brain knew what it meant, but I had to sit here and look at exactly how do you pronounce that?!? Yeah.. just like romper room, or sesame street.. I kept wanting to put an s before the t laughing

I don't think you are catastrophizing (brilliant word) anything. I have read some of your story off and on since I have been here, you have been here a long time. Cora is the luckiest pup in the world to have found somebody to unconditionally love and accept her and give her the best life that she could ever have hoped for. And you did it. You found ways to ensure that she has lead a happy healthy life. Your story is just amazing. So yeah, I think if I were in your shoes I would be totally panic stricken.

People here have lived her journey with you through all of your posted experiences. I have only read your posts like a story, but it is enough to know how special your pack is.

I really hope that like Sally said, she just tweaked something. I hope she's just got a sore muscle and some R&R and maybe stronger meds are going to be the fix for you. I know it must have been awfully frustrating taking her with you and then being unable to do what you set out to do. And of course, more hurry up and wait in a frenzy of worry.

Sending you warm healing peaceful hugs, thoughts are with you. I have no doubt you have a whole cheerleading squad here that have your back heart

Of course you are worried, that's totally ok and all of us would feel the same way you do about our fears and the future. Try not to panic though. She has come a long, long way and although this may appear to be bad, hopefully it's nothing more than a strain that R&R, good medication and some manual therapy can cure. Also keep in mind that injuries can present in different ways, and oftentimes the place where we think our dog has injured is actually coming from another part of the body. So it could be a neck pull or something elsewehre.

Cora is still a young pup with a lot of life ahead, don't panic, and let us know how things go this week. We will be waiting for an update!

{{{{hugs}}}}

P.S. had no idea you are now working in a vet office, that is fantastic!

Oh wow.  I am so sorry Cora is having these issues.  I am glad to hear you are working at a vet clinic so that you can get the help for her that she needs.  One step at a time.  Don't put the cart before the horse.

Breathe... You have this.  You and Cora have come a long ways.  She is still young yet.

Thank you all. You helped calm me some. I'm still really concerned, but you've given me some hope back. Jerry, that's true the pain can present in an area other than where the problem is. And we know that nothing with Cora goes normally, so that's something to hold onto

The brain damage she has just complicates things so much. R&R is a great concept but she's made that so hard. She fights going into the kennel now and the only way to get her in seems to cause her pain. So I made a pen for her where I can just pick her up and lay her gently in. That was working until things went down hill.  Now she will wake up in pain and start thrashing around and making everything worse for herself.

I haven't seen her in this much pain since she injured her stump (you all who are long time members may remember). And I'm not sure it was this bad then. It's breaking my freaking heart. Add she's noisy and vocal when she's hurting so she's stressed, she's stressing me and the other animals. And none of us have slept well as a result. We got about 6 hours or so last night which was pretty good. Then she woke crying and barking and that kept up. She was so worked up, that when I tried to give her the tramadol she ended up inhaling it and coughed it back up because she was just barking non-stop. That's sort of how things have been going for the last few days. The tramadol does help though and right now she's in the yard and I'm letting her be out because for tonight, I just want her to be happy. Tomorrow will be the day to figure out what's next.

And yes, I work in a vet office and most days I love it. It's definitely intense and has great days and hard days. Almost every day has a puppy though, so that's good.

Hey Topher, I'm sorry Cora is having so much pain!

And also more blood work done because she was an uncooperative butt and squirmed and pulled the needle out

This gave me a little smile- made me think of my little Pug-butt Tani at the vet!

So Cora is around 5.5 years old now?  I'm wondering if she has some arthritis since you said she has been up and down for 4 or 5 months.  Tani was diagnosed with arthritis when she was 6 years old.  Cora and Tani had some similar issues which led to some extra body wear and tear at a pretty young age.

I hope the news today is good in that there is something definitive you can treat.

You guys are a remarkable team and such an inspiration!

Ok, it ended up being an extremely long day but Cora is home. And now I'm going to babble. Her blood work looked good. She has some arthritis in her right hip but not too bad. She is also dealing with wind up pain. So basically, here nervous system has become over activated to sensation and interpreting it as pain. She has always had some over sensitivity to certain types of pain and showed signs of phantom limb pain. I think the developing arthritis and then the fall she took pushed her over an edge.

She got sedated for the x-ray and she seemed to be under but when we moved her onto the x-ray machine and the tech was trying to take measurements she was barking and getting upset. She wasn't moving much but she wasn't super still either. The doctor gave her a bit more sedative and that worked. So, she and I were hanging out in one of the exam rooms together. I was just laying with her. I and many people like this doctor because he's very experienced, thoughtful and caring. The downside is, he doesn't like to say no to anyone and can get backed up and spread thin. So we had a wait. That's when the doctor came in and we took a look at the x-rays.

Then he gave her another injection to help wake her up. Then they went to run her blood. As she was waking up, she kept snapping her jaw and just wasn't right. She'd be ok and quiet and then she'd just start snapping. It was getting worse and I told the doctor but I don't know if it fully registered. Then they thought they'd have to draw more blood (poor baby) and she flipped. She bit me and was ready to bite anyone. It was awful. They finally said they could work with the blood she'd gotten. She was just so weird and out of it and the only time she was calm was if I was basically lying on her. Even then she'd go through periods of biting the blanket. She just wasn't herself.

So the doctor and I talked about the option of giving her yet another med. Neither of us were thrilled because of all the meds in her system and not knowing how she'd react. I finally said yes, because she wasn't improving and it could be hours before she would if we waited and she was so obviously distressed. So he did and she calmed down... and her heart rate dropped too low so she got more medicine.

Umm... so. Just a wee bit stressful. I know this is why her old/other vet has always been so cautious about doing anything with her. Because with the brain damage and all, it's hard to predict how she will react to routine things.

But the dr says we can go way up in the amount of gabapnetin and there's other things we can try. And if we can get her calmed down  and the pain level down then we can work on long term options. I am willing to do manual therapy with her but at this point she simply won't cooperate.

So, she's still super sedated but I took her home. I have the doctor's cell phone am supposed to text him updates. heh. he said, "Not that I'm worried. Her heart rate is ok." and then says text me so I don't worry.

And now I'm going to check on her and then pour myself a stiff drink.

Ouch.. man you must be just whooped. That sounds like the kind of day that just sucks every last bit of life out of you. I am glad in the end that you both ended up home and ok. I cannot even imagine having a dog that you have to be so careful using common drugs, and her reaction and biting just sounds miserable.

You probably have already, but I will throw it out there just in case. Have you tried CBD oil with her? I only ask because one of the better effects that I have clearly seen is that Mitchell's less stressed, more layed back and even just generally calmer and happier attitude. For the first time in the 5 years that we have had him he does not freak out over thunder and fireworks anymore.

And of course I see now that Cora might react totally differently, but if you would like any information on the sources I have gotten it from please don't hesitate to PM me and I will be happy to share anything that I can with you.

I hope today is a better day.

You know, I tried CBD oil on Floyd, my nervous/reactive dog, and it didn't work but I have never tried it on Cora. That's a thought. Not right now, she's had enough new stuff poured into her system.

I didn't sleep well last night. Neither did Floyd. Heh, he woke me twice having nightmares. Pour guy. Guess he's worried about everything going on. Cora slept and slept and slept. I hadn't seen her walk since before the x-ray and it had to be over 15 hours since she peed. So I finally got her up and took her out. I used the halter to get her out and at first it seemed like she wasn't going to be coordinated enough to walk. She finally pulled it together and went to the bathroom but she's tired and wobbly. I don't know if that's after effects of the meds from yesterday (that was so freaking scary) or because I have started increasing her gabapentin.

She has a small pen on my porch with a outdoor rug and that's where she was briefly. It's one of her favorite places and the rug makes it easier for her to walk. And she loves to be outside unless the weather is truly miserable. But she was just too wobbly and trying to walk so I put her back into her pen. I did syringe feed her some water which she really liked.

Thinking about wind up pain and how she was before her stump was amputated does give me hope. Because she was miserable and difficult and over responsive then too and since then things have gone well. It is really unfortunate that the arthritis is on the right back leg. Her left back leg is her weakest leg so that right back takes a lot of load.

Absolutely  riveted  to every single word you wrote!!  And I am weak amd exhausted from just reading  this...I can only  imagine how you must feel!!

You understand  your Cora so well, so very well.  I can only add words of encouragement  and a knowing  that you and she WILL get past this!  The hurdles you two have overcome  are incomprehensible to the rest of us.  We just know that, somehow you are always able to plow through the  challenges  and get to a better place.  And you will this time too!

I think you and your Vet have analyzed  her situation  as best anyone can.  It just makes sense.

Hoping for a good turnaround  soon.

And yeah, anyone  reading  this thread not familiar  with Cora, please catch upand you will understand  we are truly walking  with a hero and a Saint ❤

Wow what a lonnnnnnng day. I think your vet sounds like a great one though, so glad to hear you have a practitioner like that on your side.

Dr. Pam our Fairy Vet Mother and Dr. Mike Petty says that wind-up pain (aka hyperalgesia) can be successfully treated with amantadine and acupuncture. Were either of these discussed?  Also keep in mind that Gabapentin given in the AM can make drowsiness symptoms worse. Talk to the vet about adjusting the timing, that may help.

I'm kinda thinking that CBD oil could be something to explore with your vet. It's worth talking about, and since you're in a legal state there shouldn't be too much of an issue. My elderly mom had horrible pain that not even the strongest pain killers were controlling, and they frankly made her bonkers, we thought she was getting old-timers. She wasn't, it was the pharmaceuticals turning her brain to mush. We went the CBD route and she is a new, happier person. I wasn't a believer in it until I saw how it worked on her. If your vet isn't too comfortable with the subject I have no doubt that you can find on somewhere within a reasonable distance to you.

I hope things get better. Hang in there, you are doing so great! And give Floyd extra smooches from us for being a patient big brother.
