Well, I take Little Wyatt to the vet for the first time (within living with us)

I bring big brother Jake for support.

Little Wyatt has such HUGE fear/shyness issues.

He basically shuts-down when you touch him. If you can catch him.

The exam was going very well and all of a sudden, Wyatt SCREAMS, BITES the vet on the arm,

pee'd all over the table and himself.

He didn’t break the skin (thank goodness) and I was left to clean up the
mess.

I felt so bad, nearly cried. Never had a dog bite someone.
An assistant came back in and muzzled Wyatt, the exam continued without
incident.

All in all, it's confirmed - Wyatt's paw was removed AFTER he was born. Vet
thinks it was probably crushed.

And I was able to get some joint supplements to help ward off future
problems. I hope.

He weighs 12 pounds and the vet would like him to lose some weight.

(((Sigh))) embarassed

I just needed to tell someone.

By the way - big brother Jake slept like an angel on the bench through the whole thing.

Sheesh! No help at all!

aw geesh...haven't you ever wanted to bite a doctor during an exam????  no blood, no foul...  as a young girl, gayle used to get 'the face hat' when she got nail trims...now, after getting poked, proded, stitched and such, she just 'goes with the flow' as long as i'm there with her.  glad wyatt is doing so well, except for the weight...of course who amoung us couldn't loose a few lbs....

charon & gayle

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included).  She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.

Oh you know it! I want to bite someone almost everyday, doctor or not! LOL!

My oldest dog, Jasper (12 yrs) won't let us trim his nails or pick him up anymore.

We have a ramp to load him into the Jeep and on to the groomers.

And all humans and dogs in this household could lose a few pounds.

I do feel it is petty to mention Wyatt's episode

(being we are non-cancer)

when so many here are going through so much, much, more with cancer.

But I wanted to share...we are a Tripawd family with issues too winker

Poor Wyatt - and, yes, we are all the Tripawd family. And we like hearing the non-cancer stuff! It makes for a nice break, even if some poor vet needed to get bit in the process to take our minds off the cancer. 😉 It's good that he didn't break the skin. Poor guy was just a little freaked out, sounds like.

Hopefully he'll learn soon that (most) people are good things. And, yes, even though it's not yet noon I've already come across two people today that I probably would have biten, given the chance...

Definitely keep us updated on him! And pics, we need pics!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. poor Wyatt.  I have a fear biter as well, she's drawn blood twince from men who've tried to grab her despite my protests.  Luckily both of the vets I see are very understanding.  I pretty much feed Suki hotdogs for the whole vistit, and watch her closely.  If I feel like she's reaching the breaking point we all take a break.  I personally think muzzeling only makes things more terrifying for the poor dog, and should only be used as a last resort.  You could try working with Wyatt at home, making sure he;s comfortable with you touching him eveywhere is a start and then move on to friends and family.  Unfortunatley small dogs often don't get the socialization they need as puppies.  If you feel ike muzzeling is a necessity than you should get one and familiarize Wyatt with it so he's comfortable wearing it and having it put on.

Don't feel to bad I'm sure it's not the first or the last time a this vet will get bit, and now you have something you can work on.  Start out slowly  and give lots of treats for good behavior.  It took me about a year to get Suki comfortable with touch and she still growls on some occasions, but all in all I'm pretty comfortable with her in public settings.  I find it helps if I restrain Suki myself.  If you can find a vet willing to work with you have them show you the best way to hold the dogs head etc, so you can prevent anyone getting bit during exams.  I had the good fortune to intern with my vet while I was in school so we have a great relationship.

Poor Wyatt- sounds like his first few months (before you adopted him) might have been less than desirable.

All stories are welcome here- we are family.  We even welcome the occasional story about those silly quad dogs!!

My rescue quad pug Obie is now 5, was 4 when I adopted him.  His first four years were not good- he is really shy around people and dogs because he was never socialized, and I suspect some trauma. We are working on lots of issues with him- but the vet thing is funny for us.  As much as he is shy around strangers, and won't let people touch him,  he LOVES the vet and all the staff... because they feed him when he is there.  For Obie food trumps everything else.

I didn't realize Wyatt was so small- Obie weighs 16.5 pounds.

If you want to compare notes on dealing with shyness send me a PM.  I am always looking for new ideas for Obie.

My Tosca has a red flag in her file, cuz she tried to eat the vet tech -- and let me tell you a 90 lb dog can leave a lot more damage than a little guy. I have to sit on the floor with her and hold her head, and talk to her, and she has to be laying on her side, completely relaxed before anyone can touch her. If too many of them come at her at once, she whirls that ginormous head around, teeth bared... It's not pretty, but we've gotten so that we can do it, and my vet knows there's a "process" to it, so she works with us.

Don't feel bad if your pup is scared when he visits the doctor -- it's scary. But work with him, so that it's not a totally traumatic event...

Reading about an incident that doesn't pertain to cancer is a welcome, in my book. Tonight I take the pups for their final shots, so I hope I don't have a story to share with all of you cool

12 lbs??? Gee, that is small. Mine are growing too fast. 3 weeks ago they weighed 18 & 20 lbs. Now I'm sure they are up to 25.

Give that little pup Wyatt a kiss on his snout from me.
