We adopted an adorable tripawd Doberman puppy on 6/3. We named him Dexter. His rear leg was amputated at 5 weeks. The rescue was told someone sat on him. After having him for only a day, I noticed he seemed unsteady on his remaining rear leg. I thought he might need physical therapy. I made an appointment with my vet for this reason and also for his upcoming vaccinations. The moment my vet walked in and saw him try to stand, he dropped to his knees and said something was very wrong. We immediately had an xray taken. And then more x-rays the next day on an empty stomach. His remaining rear limb is dislocated at the hip. It is not something my vet felt he could fix. He suggested we see an ortho vet. My best friend used to work for VCA in Columbus (we live in Cincinnati) and she suggested we see the vet there. I made an appointment and we took the 2 hour drive to Columbus today. I sent all of his records and x-rays via email. The Dr suggests we do an FHO. He's very experienced in doing them. Even on larger dogs. And seems very confident Dexter will be able to live a normal life and be pain free. I'm concerned about the recovery and I want to be as ready as I can be. His surgery won't be until October as he still has plenty of growing to do and his bones need to harden. Has anyone had a rear leg amputee then have to have an FHO? A puppy this young go through this? I reached out to the rescue we got him from but they were no help. They actually said if he'd still been in their care and they found out he needed this type of surgery, they would not have paid for it. I'm assuming that means they would have had him euthanized. This had been a lot for us to take in after just a month with this guy. He is the sweetest puppy and I think he deserves the best. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Dexter and family, welcome! Your future posts won't need to wait for approval so post away.

Thank you for adopting this sweet boy and giving him a chance at an excellent life. You've done everything right so far, and it's great that you had a specialist consult (I'm assuming the vet is an orthopedic specialist?). To answer your question, yes, many Tripawds have had remaining leg surgeries including FHOs, and recovered successfully. Most of the ones I can think of however, were not this young, a little older but often around 1 year or so.

A few questions:

  • What did the specialist say about how his age might affect the surgery recovery and future mobility?
  • Also, for this type of surgery to be successful, extensive rehab therapy by a qualified practitioner is critical. Is there a plan for rehab for the little guy?
  • And how will his immediate pain management needs be handled? The unsteadiness on his feet sounds like it could be painful (see these pain signals for insight on deciphering pain in dogs.

To be absolutely certain this is the right type of surgery, I would want another case review and opinion by another orthopedic vet. If you'd like help with finding one, let us know.

Meanwhile check out 10 Things to Expect when Adopting a Tripawd, so you know other aspects about keeping him healthy and injury free for life 🙂
