Great news Sally! It must warm your heart that Merry Myrtle is so loving to Frankie. You are such a great support to everyone and their cats and dogs so this is truly a relief to all of us to know that you and your family are well.

Lots of love to you, MM and that hound.

OMD!!! I just hurriedly read through your entire post(s) in a panic!!!! I'm so relieved to know that Frankie is going to be okay.

After the hickory nut incident with Meesha, it's no surprise that I worry about her eating everything! I'm always scolding the hub-a-dub to NOT do his meds anywhere near where the girls can get to whatever he may drop. But never once have I thought about them getting into anything while I'm not looking, well at least anything else other than hickory nuts.

Thanks to Frankie, there'll be some changes happening at the House of Harmony!

On the light side, this morning while trying to leave for work, Meesha jumped on me and pulled my skirt down around my ankles. Thank goodness we live out in the country where no one had to witness that eye-gouging sight!!

Whew, she could worry the horns off a billy-goat!!!

xoxoxo

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

So Jerry pointed me in the direction of this post and I just HAD to share my own story. I haven't had time to read all of the posts because I am on my lunch at work, but hopefully I'll be able to read them soon.

So I am currently dealing with a(n approximately) 13 year old Russian Wolfhound/Husky mix (as seen in my profile pic) who developed a mass on his foot in September. We took him in at the end of October and it turned out to be a mass cell tumor. This stupid tumor is in such an awkward spot! It is about 1.5 inches long and about an inch wide and it is on the outside edge of his right front ankle. Part of the tumor wraps underneath of his dewpad. The general opinion is that the tumor is impossible ro remove without reconstructive surgery because there isn't enough flesh on his ankle to get the surgery site to close and heal. So on Wednesday we opted to have a biopsy done on Kitna's mass to determine the grade (this is in addition to the staging that we had done about two weeks ago). Well, Kitna got sent home with 500 mg of Rimadyl and I gave him 50 mg that evening when I got him home.

The next day I had school and my husband works evenings so I left for work around 7:30am and my husband was home with them until about 2pm. He volunteered to take Kitna back to the vet that day because they wanted to check on the incision site the day after surgery and I couldn't take them because I have class right after work. So he crated our other dog and left around 8am and returned around 9:30 - 10 am. The dogs were out and about between 9:30am ish and 2pm. Well, I got home at 8pm, after 8.5 hours of work and about 3.5 hours of school, let the dogs out to potty, and went to grab Kitna's Rimadyl, which I had left on the kitchen counter with my personal meds.

The bottle was gone.

At first I thought maybe I had misplaced it because both dogs were perfectly fine and happy. Snickers even gave me a happy dance when I got home. (She tucks her tail, prances, and bounces in circles lol) So I looked and looked and looked and I finally found the remains of the "childproof" pill bottle on the side of our bed with a big tooth hole in the lid. Both dogs counter surf, but only one of them has the jaw strength to chew open that hard plastic bottle. Snickers. So I called the emergency vet and told them that my 60# dog had consumed 450mg of Rimadyl between 6 and 10 hours ago, they recommended that we bring her in and I asked them what would an overdose of rimadyl do, what signs should I look for that are indicative of an overdose? She said that overdosing on Rimadyl is like overdosing on advil; it causes liver failure. So I packed up both dogs and we sped to the emergency vets where they made Snickers throw up all that yummy medicine and then fed her activated charcoal (which she happily lapped up, btw) to help her pass the rest of it.

The total came to $210, which really isn't that bad for a trip to the emergency vets. If it had gone over $1000 we would have been in trouble. Apparently Snickers consumed just below the toxic amount of Rimadyl for a dog of her weight. so we lucked out on that!

When Snickers was brought in from the back she was happy and bouncy and was rubbing against everything. You'd have no idea that she had just been fed activated charcoal and been made to throw up. Snickers is crazy.

This is what she choose to do right after we got home:

I'm so glad I'm not the only person with a naughty dog. 😉

Wow! Thank you so much for letting Sally know she wasn't the only one something like this has happened to. I'm really glad Snickers is OK!

Okay, so Frankie now.is having "apparently" a bit.of muscle strain, wear and tear etc on his remaining front leg (vet thinks at elbow) and some soreness when poked and prodded on rear leg hip area (same side as amputation).

Video kinda shows his his rear leg gait looking a little.off...and you should be able ro see how "low" his head and upper body "bobs" down. I described it to the vet as though his leg "gives way" at the shoulder. She determined it was more an elbow issue.

ANYWAY, she's suggesting RIMADYL, rest, Tramadol as the best approach. She didn't feel a need for xrays I guess based on all her palpitations, prodding, pulling, etc.

Of course, we did bloodwork and she called today to say everything came back "spot on normal", everything was right in the mid range.

Thus, she wants ro put Frankie on a HALF normal dose (50 mg instead of 100...he's 68 lbs) for five days with 20 mg pepcid twice a day.

I'm PETRIFIED ro introduce Rimadyl back into his system, even at half strength. And would half strength even do any good anyway?

As ALWAYS, your insight is GREATLY APPRECIATED and valued!!

With gratitude.to you...and TAZZIE too!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS..I did my best to keep him in low gear yesterday, no sofa jumping, squirrel chasing, etc Gave him one Tramadol and his front leg seemed "better" already...not "giving out".......rear leg gait still looks "off" It appears.there.are.no Rehab Specialist anywhere near my area. I do think that would help greatly though.

Oh, Sally - Frankie really puts you and your vet through your paces! I just wanted to say that this happens to Jack every so often when we let her walk too far - her remaining front elbow and hip on her amp side get sore. It's so sad to watch her bob her head to take weight off her front leg! For us, it usually only takes a few days of light exercise to get back to normal - I'm hoping Frankie's the same and heals quickly!

(And I'm sorry, but I have no words of wisdom on the pain meds! I'm always terrified of doses and messing things up, too)

Poor Frankie! He definitely looks like he's hurting. Can your vet prescribe one of the other anti-inflammatory es?

I have to say that when's saw the title of this post come up, all I thought of was "Oh no, not again". Glad to hear it was just an add on at the end if the other incident.

Kathi and the Turbotail Spril Angel...and the Labrafork

PS. I hope this makes sense. The video is hiding the compose reply screen.

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!
