Hi. My best friend Zooey, was recently diagnosed with a mast cell tumor on her left back leg, she had surgery to remove and is  now facing amputation on Monday. We have not recieved staging yet, but vet said it had spread to local lymph node. They did ultrasound & x-rays which show no obvious signs of cancer metastasis, Now she’s having amputation and we are waiting on staging. So very scared & nervous for my girl to have to go through this,

Sorry your sweet Zooey is having to go through this.  Your post has been approved so you will have access to support and information.

Tell is more about Zooey.  How old is she, what does she weigh.  The Vet obviously  thinks she's a good candidate  for amputation  phusic and attitude wise.  It is good that there is no sign of spreading  from the ultra sound and xray.

I know it's hard to wait for the staging, but that is when you will have an idea of the best path forward.  We are hoping for the best possible outcome.

Keep things chunked down for now and just focus on a successful surgery and getting her through recovery..   If you have hardwood floors you'll want nonslip scatter rugs for traction .    She'll need to come home with proper pain meds and ample supply.

Psin management  is crucial for  a good recovery.

Will she be spending Monday  night at a fully staffed clinic.  That's  most ideal, but not always possible  depending on who is doing the surgery.

It generally takes about two weeks to recover  from the surgery itself....some may need a bit more time.  The first two weeks nothing but SHORT leashed potty breaks and back in for more rest.  No running or jumping, avoid stairs if possible.

Stay connected to us and we'll  help you navigate  through recovery .  You are not alone on this journey,  we are right by your side, okay?

I don't know if I would rush to amputation if you don't know the Grade or margins yet. Have you consulted with an oncologist?

Zooey is 10 years old and weighs 17lbs. I’m honestly trusting my vet to know what’s the right thing to do, I have tried getting her into an oncologist but they all have an average of a 4 week wait to get in. The vet said it’s important to have it amputated as soon as possible to avoid spread. This has all happened so fast, I haven’t even had enough time to think of what needs to be done. I am just trusting her vet. The amputation is scheduled for early tomorrow morning. I hope I’m doing the right thing. I only want the best for Zooey.

Well if it is in her lymph node it has probably already spread but typically most people would wait for the staging.
