Our Meesha (Lab/Pit mix) had a hickory nut removed from her small intestines a little over a month ago. She's recuperated wonderfully. However, this past Friday evening, whilst inspecting her incision scar I noticed a place, approximately the size of a quarter, on her abdomen that was oozing clear pink liquid. It wasn't stinky, but I had a knee-jerk reaction that it was MCT, or a hernia, blah, blah, blah.

We promptly took her to our vet first thing Saturday morning where he told us that she was having a reaction to her internal stitches. We were told to stop her licking and put a hot compress on her tummy twice daily. As I've said before, if you've ever tried to put pantyhose on an octopus, you'll instantly know our challenge with Meesha.

Any-hoo, I was hoping to get a little more enlightenment regarding this issue and the best way to find relief for her.

Thanks in advance for listening!!!

I don't have any advice but I just love your expressions! Put pantyhose on an octopus! 🙂

Poor Meesha ... I had to ice Shelby post amp so I can assume it's similar in the struggles (she hated it) ... maybe try a towel between the compress? And gentle pets to get her to go to a 'calm' and 'zen' like status?

Hugs!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

That is a funny expression!

Sorry Meesha is dealing with this! Does she have to wear the cone of shame ?

Pam if you see anything in this article that could use updating, let us know. Thanks!

After posting this I found info on this subject:

I'm wondering if a heating pad would do the trick as well. Her vet actually suggested putting her in the tub and using a sprayer with warm water on her belly. Oh yeah, that's gonna happen, whatever!

Alison, Meesha is such a wiggle-worm. I mean she truly defines the whole term of "tail wagging the dog". She is constantly running, jumping, wiggling, or beating us with her tail. Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all complaining, it's just so difficult to keep up with her.

The new place we living has alot of hardscaping. There is a brick retaining wall and brick stair cases that run from the driveway (concrete) to the front and back yards. She is constantly jumping off that wall and rolling down the brick stairs. She's got scrapes all over her sides and legs from her bat-$hit crazy antics.

We love her so much, but she can worry the horns off a billy-goat!

Great minds think alike! 😉 Thanks for searching.

I think a heating pad could work as long as you put a towel between it and her belly.

Pam that almost sounds like a small seroma has formed.  Now I know I'm a people not a furface but that's what happened to me after I had colon surgery.  I developed a pocket of fluid I had to pack with gauze.  Mine was also due to one lousy inside stitch that wouldn't heal.  So when Max got his seroma after amp I was more than familiar with it.  Our surgeon told us to clean it with Hibiclens mixed with water 2 times a day to inhibit bacteria growth and gently massage the area to help the fluid absorb.  Within a week Maxs was closed up.  Hopefully Dr Pam will have some wise words here cause I'm probably wrong but wanted to share my experiences with you.  Pantyhose on an octopus??  You crack me up!  Give Meesha a huge kiss and hugs and love to you & her!

Usually a suture reaction occurs at either end of the incision where the knots are tied.  If possible the suture material can be pulled out and a warm washcloth held on the area twice daily.  If that isn't working you can try the shower method.  I usually add an antibiotic since these can get infected.

From one "Pam" to another, THANKS!!

We've been quite vigilant about this and it looks like there are other spots popping up. Also, she had a "dead tail" incident last night which is painful for her. On the positive side, her being so miserable from her tail kept her distracted from licking her incision. We unsuccessfully put an e-collar on her; she destroyed it. Now looking into the boxer idea to keep her from licking, however, it's difficult since she eats everything.

Thanks again!
