My dog, Willow, is a left front leg amputee.  The "elbow" joint on her right front leg has a callous since she uses it to bear her weight getting up and down.  I noticed yesterday that the callous is cracked and irritated.  Is there any harm in trying a product called Zim's Wound Care Gel on it?  The ingredients are Hydrolysate of Collagen (Type 1 Collagen) and Purified Water.  If she were to ingest it, would it be toxic?  She can't really get to the area to lick it, but I am concerned about it wiping or flaking off once dry - she'll eat anything!

Thank you,

Carol

That product is safe as is Bag Balm, aloe vera gel, or topical vitamin E.  You will probably need some sort of elbow pad (such as Dog Leggs) to keep the area clean and dry.  If elbow wounds get deep they can be a nightmare to treat!

Thank you for asking and good luck with that! And thanks for the quick answer Pam.

A while back, a member shared plans for the homemade elbow pads she made for her dog with similar problems...

Also see Elgin's blog, he has a very unique elbow protector too. And our gear blog has this article:

Atlas, you rock!  Wow, he's such a handsome boy.  Great videos.  Libby amazed me for days (she still does) at how well she adapted.  Those links for elbow sores have great info.

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
