My boxer dog had the amputation of his front right leg two days go, my quest is when is it best for him to start walking or at least try to walk? And second how or what is the best way for me to assist him in going potty? He pees fine normally, he has not gone poop as of yet.. any advice will help..

Hi Ross, welcome. While we wait for Dr. Pam's insight, can you tell us, what is your dog's name? How old/young is he? Does he have any other medical issues, weight issues, etc?

I'm not a vet but what we have learned here is that right now he should only be walking to his potty spot, on leash, and back inside. Until his stitches are out keep his activity very, very minimal.

And don't worry, the poopiconwill happen. Most pets are constipated after returning home from the clinic. Sometimes it can take up to 5 days! You can help move things along with a little pumpkin pulp added to his food, or any steamed squash really. Keeping him hydrated also helps a lot.

It depends on the dog; my Mastiff Tazzie needed to stay in the hospital a few days and didn't really walk on her own for 4 days. Other dogs are up and walking the next day.  I think it depends on size and if they were already walking on 3 legs.

I would get a good harness and use rugs or toe grips if needed; there are many links on this site.  Do not rush your dog; they typically know how much rest they need.
