Thanks guys!!!  I will do my best to try everything else before resorting to meds because like Pam said, not many dogs actually need it.  For when 4th of July comes around I give her a tablespoon of this liquid calming stuff which helps her mellow out for a few hours. Its not prescription, but it really helped take the edge off her anxiety when she heard fireworks. At least I know that works and it has some sort of natural calming things in it...

Will also look into crating if being outside becomes an issue... I am hoping that she just needs more attention before and after being outside and that she in actuality will be perfectly fine here.  I also looked into the SA link provided here and got some good tips on how to have the dogs self calm themselves. In all actuality, that might help her with fireworks and thunder since I KNOW those get her worked up.

PS. Thanks for the great range of advice! I will be sure to keep this forum bookmarked to refer back to it to try something else if my initial methods don't work. Will give you an update after she has been here a couple weeks to let you know how she is doing!

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog

Tired dogs are happy dogs!

I suspect you won't have any problems since you plan on giving her lots of attention and exercise.

Her Retired AvatarComet - 1999 to 2011

She departed us unexpectedly  January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Day 1: Test Chloe for 1 hour outside unsupervised while mom goes to gym.

Result: COMPLETE SUCCESS! She did paw once at the glass back door when I was leaving, but when I came home, no damage to door, fence, no holes in yard (except from gophers or moles) and one wiggly butt Chloe!

I did take her on a 30 min brisk walk beforehand, which for her is about an average walk (she led the whole way).  She seems to have more energy than most tripawds (helps that the amputation technically made her cancer free), so I know she can handle a bit more.

I got her an everlasting treat ball with the refillable chewable inserts, but she doesn't seem interested. I even slathered it with some peanut butter and no takes. Feels like I wasted $20... Maybe there is a way I can get her to like it?  I KNOW she would chew a bone for hours, but from everything I have read there is nothing "safe" I can leave her with unattended. Cooked bones splinter, raw bones, rawhides and nylabones both pose choking hazards if she manages to chew a chunk off and swallow it whole. way-confused Hmm risk killing her or risk $$ from my deposit, that is an easy one.

Maybe I can cook a chicken breast, freeze it and give it to her as a meatsicle? This way no bone splintering, its digestible, won't swell in her stomach (like a rawhide if a huge chunk gets swallowed) and she is occupied for hours? I will do more research online before attempting this... I also realize it would be part of her diet so I would accommodate her bfast/dinners accordingly. ooo maybe I can splurge once in a while and do a fishsicle!

Ok will let you know how she does on Wednesday.. dun dun DUN!!! First day of class ALL DAY!

So I decided to take the insert out to see if Chloe would actually even like the thing that is in the everlasting treat ball. Man did she just start going to town with that! I took it away from her after about 40 min because I want her to chew it when it is INSIDE the holder (to make it more of a challenge). Now that she knows what it is and that she likes it, I don't feel like it is such a waste.  Will still look into meatsicles!

More good news!!! So today was the REAL test because I was gone from 8am-5:30pm and I had to put Chloe outside.  First I tried to tucker her out at the beach early this morning (soft sand + tripawd = hard work) for about 30 min.  I left her with some toys and food toy options before I left and quietly snuck out. I was paranoid the whole drive to and from school wondering how Chloe would do on her own.

She was FINE!!! No damage to fence, door, no holes in lawn, just one wiggly butt dog with a helicopter tail.  She proceeded to reprimand me for being gone so long by howling at me (wagging tail of course). She didn't touch the rest of her food or her food toys, so I have no idea if she just slept the whole day or what.

Anyway, I am just going to take it one day at a time because every day that there is no damage to the house is another day I get to keep her here with me.  I will be cautious as long as she is with me because I always want here to live here.  So far so good and I hope it continues as such.

-Chloe's mom

PS and as for what Karen said about a glass door insert with a dog door, I might invest in one in a few months so that she doesn't have to be out in the rain all day.  Yes we do have a dog house but she is so dumb sometimes she would rather wait in the rain for someone to come home than seek shelter elsewhere. As long as she continues to do fine outside, I might consider the doggie door sooner than I thought laugh

Really, I am sooo excited about this because as you can tell from my first post, I was super paranoid... YAY CHLOE!!!

So happy you (and Chloe) had a great day.  Trouble sleeps the entire time we are gone.  We've thought about setting up a video, but how exciting would it be to watch a dog sleep.  I so hpe Chloe continues to be a good girl while she's alone.

Happy Dance!

YAY Chloe!!!!

Whew! What a relief. Whatever you did besides the beachtime, keep it up.

You're smart, just take each day one pawstep at a time, and celebreate every success with plenty of treats.

yes we do have a dog house but she is so dumb sometimes she would rather
wait in the rain for someone to come home than seek shelter elsewhere.

Dumb? No way, she wants to get rained on so he can look really pathetic and make her humans feel badly for leaving her outside. That's smart!

That's great news about Chloe!

See!  You worried for nothing!   I bet she'd be fine in the house too since your roommate comes home for lunch.  Refresh my memory, how old is Chloe?

I'm with my dogs all day but geeze, they only want to go out at 2pm for a little sun for about 10 minutes. (they are probably vitamin D deficient!)  Most of the time, they potty in the morning and  don't even potty until after 5pm.

HAHAHA I never thought of it that way, but I am sure you are right!!!  She is smarter than she acts sometimes.... But like I said, as long as everything goes well this fall, I think I will shell out some of my savings to invest in a doggie sliding glass door insert for the rainy winters (No wet dog smell to deal with and cheaper in the long run than doggie day camp).  Then she can be a smart dog and sleep in her own bed in my room.

oh what good news....i got the end result cuz I read the whole thread at once!!  I hate the crate (first time I have used a crate) and so does Whiskey (he actually took one end of it off and I found it in the crate...no one has figured out how that is possible) so now I leave him with access to kitchen and outside (pet door...remade for Magic to accommodate his front amp) both him and the kitten...I think actualy Casper the COneheaded cat (well Whiskey has been coneheaded til we found the magic blow up) is more destructive....and they work together...casper knocks it off the table or counter, Whiskey steals it and eats it...whatever "it" might be....so far my baseboards (which cost more than the damn floor) and my chairs, table and stools are still in one piece and so are the corners of the house and the siding..HOWEVER, he is really ramping up the chewing.  I have one of those everlasting treatballs and one that is a firehydrant...he has chewed and chewed and chewed and they are now flat...I may never need the refills I got....

I only use the crate at night and since his full blown surgery for neutering (ball didn't drop) he cannot wear out his energy and omg has this been a circus....5 min walks do NOT wear out a five month old puppy...

anyhow...enuf about him...I am so glad things are working out for Chloe...I have also used a homeopathic thing from a pet store for anxiety (trying to keep the pain meds and ace down) and Rescue Remedy and I truly do think they have a calming affect...I'll have to try giving it to WHiskey and see if that works too!! (jking...I really don't take it myself!)

Yea Chloe was smart enough at a young age (chewing age) to open my closet doors to sneak and chew my shoes.  Nobody else's shoes, just mine.  She does still like to chew bones, but she is very picky about most other treats, so I am trying to get creative. So far she likes frozen chicken broth (good cool down after long walks) with little chunks of meat in them.  Only lasts about 20 min...

Since Chloe is 9 years old, she has mellowed out a lot.  My dad was the one who got me worked into a panic when he said she tore a huge hole in part of the gate.  I honestly think something set her off like a firework or something like a fire work.  When she hears thunder or fireworks, she goes into a frenzy and freaks the heck out.  Luckily thunder storms are extremely rare where we are. Plus people illegally shoot off fireworks at night, not during the day.

I just hope wearing her out before I go to class helps her sleep the day away...
