So far.... (fingers crossed)... Bo's bodacious booty has stopped him from catching anything, lol. He will see a squirrel that will hop up to the top of the 6' fence, run right down the fence line, and outruns him. Funny thing is, I really don't know what he would do if he ever actually caught anything We have another family of feral kitties in the yard, he does the same thing. He is getting better because I shame him when he does it but fortunately everything out there has been quicker than he is so far, lol. In the house he is much gentler. If he noses the cats too much they swat him in the head and he backs off, hahah. And if he ignores them too much they will run over and head butt him until he reacts so things are mostly peaceful inside
Hugs,
Jackie, Bo, Andy, Oscar, Phoebe, and the coolest feral tripawd kitty Huckleberry
Oh Baxter! Like the others I applaud your reflexes but yikes! One day the skwirell kingdom may turn on you so be careful out there 😉
Wyat and Jerry were both a lot like Bo: they loved the hunt but never caught one. In fact one time we had a mouse get into the RV while we were sitting inside, and Wyatt let the bugger scamper across the floor right under his nose. I guess because the mouse wasn't running from him, he just didn't care. It was more about the chase for that dawg!

LOL at the image in my head of Wyatt letting a mouse run right under his nose!
It may be about the chase for Baxter too, I'm not sure. Baxter goes nuts when we see a cat on our walks. But earlier this year at the vet, one of the office kittens started rubbing up against him and he just gave this befuddled look at it.

Oh yeah, if only we had caught it on video. He stared right at it!
Baxter sounds like he's got a soft spot for kitties, maybe there's one in your future? 😉

I don't think me and kitties would get as long as well as me and doggies. And I wouldn't trust Baxter with a kitty. I was scared he was going to try to eat the one at the vet.
My brother's family just got three kittens a couple of months ago. My mom says Baxter can never go visit now.

Aww well at least you know yourself and Baxter well enough! No surprises is a good thing when it comes to other critters.

I've mentioned my parents dogs - Ripple and Tigger - on here a few times. Unfortunately, Ripple has joined Rocky at the Bridge today. He was almost 15 and battled numerous issues like a champ the last five years or so. Sally, if you're reading this, he was the one with the eye issues similar to Merry Myrtle.

Oh no! I'm sorry you guys are coping with this heartbreak, my condolences to all of you.
Fifteen years sounds like such a long time, but it goes by in the blink of an eye doesn't it? I imagine you and Ripple had a lot of good times together. And the whole stood by him for all those years, what a gift! Now, he will stand by you wearing his beautiful angel wings, with sweet Rocky by his side. They are never far.
(((hugs))))

Oh David, I'm soooo sorry! And absolutely I know who Ripple is! Not just bec of his eye issue, but because we got to know him and see an occasional picture thru his gatherings with Rocky and Baxter♥️
Yes, we can all celebrate a well loved and well lived life for an amazing fifteen years.......but that doesn't ease the grief at all. Fifteen years created a lot of routines that will no longer be there and HUGE void in the hearts of all who loved him so dearly.
Several years ago, my Happy Hannah transitioned along with several others in April...some within days of each other. We called them April's Angels . Several have also transitioned this month as well.
I have no doubt. they were all there to greet him as he ran free and young toward the Bridge. 😇
Please, please convey to your parents how very much I appreciated how they reached out to me when Merry Myrtle was first going blind. Ripley's experience helped me guide Merry Myrtle thru hers. That sweet boy touched a lot of lives💖
When you can, I hope you'll share more pictures of Ripple, and more about who he is. We already know he was well loved and well cared for and enjoyed every moment of his earth time!
Much love to all 💖

Right after I read Sally's post in April, I wrote out a long memory of Ripple, Tigger and Rocky playing together. But I guess I forgot to press Submit, because it looks like it never posted. So when I have the energy, I'll need to go back and rewrite it.
Pretty exhausted and stressed right now because Baxter and I have had an eventful weekend so far.
There's a house at the end of our neighborhood we walk past a lot. And that house has two big lab/pitbull type dogs. I think they're both younger than two, and the younger one is a bit more aggressive than the bigger older one. If they're outside, they come up to the gate and bark at Baxter. Over the past few months, when we approach that house, Baxter will lead me to the sidewalk across the street from the house. And then we'll cross back over when we're clear of their house.
We were coming back from our walk Friday night, walking along the sidewalk furthest from them, when I saw them reach the gate. And then I saw them come through the open gate, galloping toward us. Pretty much my worst fear come true. Fortunately, they weren't vicious per se, but they got up in Baxter's face. And after a second or two, he gave that little "back off out of my space" growl. Only natural for him to be defensive since he was outnumbered, outsized and hindered by a leash whereas they were unleashed. The bigger one backed off, but the other one took it as a challenge. So he and Baxter start snapping at each other. I pulled Baxter back and, perhaps stupidly, got in between them. Instinct took over and I tried to assert myself as the leader and kept yelling "NO!" at the dog.
We were along the fence of the house across the street from the dogs. The man in that house must have heard me, because he came out in his back yard and from the other side of the fence warned me that the younger dog was a "terror." He said he's told the owner he needs to keep those dogs secure in his backyard. I told him the younger dog was trying to get at Baxter and he said he'd call the owner. Of course, the owner wasn't home. After a few tense moments, the dogs walked off and went around the corner into the neighbor's front yard. I told the neighbor they had left and he suggested I go back the way I came before they came back. Well, they looped around his fence and a few moments later they were back behind us. The older dog paid us no mind, but the younger dog charged at Baxter again. I got between them, yelled some more and eventually they went back around the corner. This time, Baxter and I followed them, but where they turned around the corner, we kept going straight. Fortunately, we didn't see them again and we made it home safe and sound.
Baxter is fine. I was a little shaken when the adrenaline wore off and I realized it could have been really really bad for us.
Today, I drove back to the owner's house and talked to him through his Ring doorbell. I told him what had happened, and he said his son accidentally left the gate unlocked. He said the dogs are usually locked in the yard but every now and then they get out. I told him I wasn't about to go through that again and he needed to make sure the gate was locked. I told him if it happened again, I'd call Animal Control. And he said that was fine, that I wouldn't be the first person to call Animal Control on his dogs. And then the guy had the audacity to tell me he couldn't control if his dogs got out or not. I told him he could by keeping his damn gate locked. And he said he didn't appreciate me coming to his door to tell him how to run his house, to which I replied I would do just that when he and his dogs endanger me and my dog.
Pretty frustrated and stressed right now. I guess we'll avoid going past that house from now on. But I still had some stress walking Baxter tonight. People like that guy shouldn't be allowed to own dogs.
Needed to rant to some people who understand.

Oh gosh David!!! What a horrifying experience!!! This has me quite unsettled just reading it, so I'm sure you're still shaken and a bit piffed off too!
So relieved it turned out okay! Goodness knows it could have escalated out of control with a horrible outcome. FWIW, I think your pack leader stance, kept things from turning into a brawl. To think that there was no contact, just barking and snapping with outgoing at it was quite remarkable! I think Baxter felt quite protected with you by his side. And I also think Ripple and Rocky may have been watching over you two!😇😇
Baxter is a very smart voy in the way he avoids walking next to that house. Jow was he on the walk tonight? Acting normal and moved on??
Just so glad everyone is okay. So sorry you and Baxter had to go through this, and especially you having to deal with that owner. His reaction was just wrong!!
Well, regardless, it was great to hear from you and soooo glad you were able to keep things under control! I'm sure your energy was wjat made the difference!
Now David....all this but no pictures of Baxter??, we'll wait...

Oh goodness... what an awful experience. It brought me right back to when I was about 16 and was attacked by a large dog that was running loose. There are few things that make you feel more vulnerable than a loose dog with a bad attitude. And having Baxter there... I am so glad you are ok. As much as I love animals, I wonder if you shouldn't take something with you to protect you and Baxter on your walks. It doesn't sound like that idiot is going to do anything any time soon. The nice thing about calling Animal Control is if they are picked up, the fines should increase each time they pick them up. But I hate to even think of an instance where one or both of you get hurt because of somebody else's negligence.
I know there are sprays that are small enough to fit in your pocket. Don't they make something that makes a loud noise too? Maybe somebody else that sees this will have ideas. I will do a little web surfing and see if there's an idea to help keep you both safe. I truly can't stand people that are irresponsible with their pets. It is even worse when they have a pet that could hurt another being.
As I was reading this I just prayed that you were both ok. I am glad you are.
Sending hugs,
Jackie and Huck
PS Yes, Sally.... this definitely calls for some Baxter photos

Oh David! I'm so glad you guys are OK. Geez what a terrible situation! It could have been soooo much worse. Rocky was looking out for you.
That guy is an idiot. I would call animal control on him tomorrow. If I had to live nearby and my safety was in danger just because I wanted to take a walk, I wouldn't hesitate. Oh and Jackie is right: pepperspray. I hate to say it too but if it means you and Baxter will be safe if it happens again, then so be it. Be safe!

Try PET CORRECTOR on Amazon. It emits a very loud air hiss sound. I've used it in the past to avert a bad situation (dog and cat, and I'll leave it at that). It works!
The only thing is it woild scare Baxter as well as the aggressive dog, so you would have to be prepared to hold him tightly as I'm sure he he may try and bolt away from the loud swish.
Okay, this is the none of my business category and probably very much against rational thinking. Some, not all, Animal Control (aka dog pound) are pretty quick to euthanize. I'm not sure how "agressive" these dogs would be deemed, as they did back off and no harm. However, to an overcrowded Animal Control the degree of aggression may not matter. Also, the "owner" may just turn them over to avoid fines, and the outcome would most likely be the same. To be clear, I'm not minimizing the situation at all and how awful the outcome could have been!!! The thought of Baxter (or you) being hurt is just to horrible to think avout!
Anyway, check out the Pet Corrector. It can come in handy for a lot of things.
