My cat Georgie is 10 and got his rear leg amputated due to cancer 2 weeks ago. The past 2 mornings he has woken up suddenly, started meowing and he tries to stand up but does this very distressing backwards flipping on his side and seems out of control of his body for about 30 seconds. He is totally fine after. Besides this he is eating and using his litter ok and is walking fine, doesn't seem in pain, even if I touch his incision area. It seems like a couple other people have had this experience with their tripawd babies and these episodes stop eventually. It's alarming to watch him, and Im hoping they go away soon. Also, our vet that did the surgery and we have gone to for years just shut down indefinitely- Im not sure why, maybe Covid?  - and I have to find a new vet to call about this and also get his stitches removed, so thought I'd post here in case I can get advice in the meantime. Thanks!

Virginia

Glad that overall Georgie is doing well.

This walking backwards is something that we jave seen in cats. Other Kitty members will chime in who had Direct experience with this and can give you some support. The one question I have is what kind of pain meds is Georgie on? Having  bad connection  right now.  hang on help on the way.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hi Georgie and family, I'm so glad you decided to start a new topic so we can help. As you've discovered in other Forum posts, the Tripawd cat walking backwards phenomena isn't unusual, but that doesn't make the situation any easier for you. And it's such a bummer that your vet is closed without warning, that doesn't help either. Yikes!

Was Georgie given any pain medication by your vet? Specifically, Gabapentin, which helps with nerve pain. Is he on anything now?

Since you are on the search for a new vet asap, we recommend AAHA-accredited vets whenever possible, that way you know Georgie is getting the latest and greatest pain management , treatments, clinical care, etc. The link will tell you more details. If you can't find an AAHA clinic near you, let us know and we can try to help you locate a good non-AAHA practice.

Also, did you see our most recent Tripawd Cats Walking Backwards article? I hope this helps. Please let us know how things are going OK?

Thank you! He was given Onsior and Buprenorphine but that is done now. And it really doesn't seem like he is in pain generally (though of course what do I know about cat pain)... I watched for another episode this morning but luckily he didn't have now, so it has still just been those two. I am hoping that is it!

Now it is also a matter of finding a vet to take out these sutures as - like I mentioned - his vet closed unexpectedly and I was supposed to go back there for removal. It is really hard to find an available vet in Los Angeles these days!

Ok yeah, those medications won't do anything for phantom pain . I'm not a vet, but that's just based on what we've learned in talking to pain management experts. I hope that's it on the episodes too!

Private Message me your location, I'll help you find a clinic. I'm also in Los Angeles and familiar with many practices around here.
