Well, my cat Zola was jumping off our tv stand and broke his leg while it got caught in a drawer on the way down. He had 6 fractures and the vet thought amputation was the best option. I’ve been trying to get him to lose weight already, as I know he’s quite large. He is part Maine coon and he’s a (rare) calico male. So he is already quite larger then most cats just in stature alone, but he’s also overweight even for his build.
its 3 days post op now. He’s getting more restless and moving around a bit. Doesn’t seem to be having to much trouble walking to the litter box in his kennel that he’s bound to. But I’m just freaking out.
I’m so worried because of his weight. He lost his right hind leg, and I’m just so worried about him hurting another leg it’s messing with me. I wish he could just shed all the extra weight at once but I know that’s not how it works
do any of you have pretty overweight Tripawds? Any tips to help him lose the weight.
Oh no poor Zola! Ouch! Unfortunately it's not unusual for a cat to be in this situation, we've had quite a few members join us this way.
Well you made a good decision to take his broken leg off. I know the recovery phase is pretty scary but it's only temporary, you'll both get through this. As for the weight loss, you are right, it's not going to come off quickly but it WILL come off with your help (and your vets). Did your vet come up with a game plan to help you help him drop the pounds? Prescription diets can help at a time like this, did they prescribe any?
Helping a cat lose weight is a challenge but it's not impossible. Here's some ideas for you:

Well Zola, spu ds like quite a feisty kitty and that's helpful in recovery. Geez, so sorry about how you got here, but thank goodness you were there and could get him to a Vet.
And yes, iamputation is absolutely the best solution to get Zola back to being Zola again!! As Jerry said, recover doesn last furever and you are in the roughest part for the next week, or two.
That fact that Zola is mobile enough to get to potty is really good sign this early on!! Many cats, whether overweight or not, take a bit longer to take some hops
YWithou question you'll get the weight off of Lola. Patience, proper nutrition, it'll happen. She is certainly not the first "chunky" dog or cat who went thru amputation a bit on the fluffy side.
,otty members will co e along with so e good tips. All I know is with kitties is you don't want them to drop weight too quickly.
