We made it through the first night. Lucky has been wanting lots of cuddles and love (not complaining!!) About 6 hours after his first dose of gabapentin and buprenorphine he got very restless and started trying to lick his incision. I’m thinking that the anesthesia had just about worn off and he felt more pain. I’m watching this morning to see if the same thing occurs around the same time frame. He is eating, peed once and pooped once! Still a bit unsteady on his paws but I figure that’s the medication. He is doing great!!! Mom on the other hand needs some sleep LOL!! Very grateful that he is doing as well as he is!!

I am really happy it is going well, it is a week since my cat had its amputation and she has done so well, I only hope that you can be as lucky as we are.
I would suggest that each cat will recover differently, so you should always react to how he is doing, not on the basis of some predetermined or average timetable which may not be appropriate to him.

Cheers to one night down! That's great. Remember to stay ahead of the pain. Usually a dosage needs some fine-tuning in order to do that, so let your vet know that the meds are wearing off earlier than expected and see what they think about adjusting them.
I hope your day is mellow and restful. I'm in the Tripawds Chat off and on today, and on the Tripawds Helpline if you need anything.

Did they instruct you to give the Gabapentin and Bup. one hour apart? I can't tell you the reasoning as I never asked the why! Our instructions were clear and repeated on our discharge papers! One hour apart from each other! Not at the same time. Our Gabapentin was every 8 hours and Bup every 8-12 hours. Not all kitties get the same drugs, dosages, or protocol. Purrkins needed more Burprenohoine prescribed as he was sent home with 3 days initially
- 14 days Gabapentin 100 mg capsule one capsule by mouth every 8 hours
- 12 days Buprenorphine 0.3 mg every 8-12 hours
Do you have the recovery suit on or cone on Lucky now? It is usual for them to want to lick the incision! We don't want him going after or reaching the incision, not worth the risks! Restitched, restapled infection etc.
You are both doing Excellent for coming home the first night!!! You will have to rest when Lucky does. I know I'm working with one 2 hours of sleep today myself it comes with the territory. Its temporary things will get better each day as long as the pain is managed!
You are doing Great Barb Scratches to Lucky, please.
Hugs

Holly, they did not mention separating the two meds. They did increase his gabapentin dose from 0.3 to 0.35mL every 8 hours at discharge. I have been doing both at the same time. I will call them first thing tomorrow morning!
He has slept most of the day. I don’t have the recovery suit on him yet. I have been intervening each time he has started to lick. One concern is they neutered him at the same time so I’m not letting him lick down there at all.
I tried to upload a picture showing his incision but haven’t been successful yet. I’ll try again later. The incision looks very good!! His skin is bruised but that’s to be expected.
I’ll keep you all updated. Thanks for all the advice and encouragement!! I appreciate it!

Still trying to post a picture of my Little Man. I separated his doses of gabapentin and buprenorphine. I actually waited on his middle of the night dose of buprenorphine until 8 this morning. He slept after his 2am gabapentin. Not sure if he still needs the buprenorphine or not. Has anyone else's cat wanted to play the day after surgery???? When he is awake he is trying to climb the netting on the corral, looking up as if he is going to try to jump up onto the desk. He is out of the corral and just in the room so I may take the corral down. He found a small ball that I had neglected to pick up in my room preparation and was batting it around. Not sure what to make of this!

Each cat is different, but my cat was fully back to normal in two days, it really was remarkable.
I was lucky as my cat is quite old so she was never going to strain herself, which made giving her early freedom an easy decision.
I would suggest that if he is fretting being confined that cannot be good for him, he will let you know the speed of his recovery but how happy would you have been a few days ago if you had known that this was going to be an issue!
