Hi all,

I recently adopted a 13 month old GSD tripod, missing a front leg. She is about 4-5 months post amputation.

An animal physio said it would be good to get her a front leg brace as she says "her carpal joint is hyper extending a bit".

She had watched this video https://youtu.b.....03uP89JWMU

Is she right? Is it common to use leg braces right from the start, to safeguard against possible issues in the future? Or does it look like my dog has an issue already?

If you do think she needs to be in a leg brace, what is the best one to get please and should she wear it all the time or just on walks?

Thank you.

I live in Malta but can get most things online from the UK, if needs be.

Please watch our video interviews with Orthopets for complete details about the benefits of braces and contact them directly for the best fit. They work with vets all over the world. Another good option is Hero Braces. Both of these manufacturers only work with veterinarians. We do not recommend "off the shelf" solutions.

I don't have any specific insight I to your pup's situation, but just wanted to say THANK YOU for giving this precious Soul such a loving and fun home!! 🙂 🙂

I had so much fun watching him and all the dogs in this joyous video! Watching dogs being dogs, running free and happy, is truly a beautiful sight!

I hope you'll keep us posted and let us know how things are going. And we would loooove to see more pictures and videos....and with his dog pals too! Seeing the two swimming with the stick.....priceless!

Best wishes

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Our physio always said that we shouldn't take over the normal function of the leg by using a brace sooner than necessary. Saying this: your dog's carpal joint looks more extended in the video than my dog's. I am neither a vet nor a Physio so it's hard to say. I think it's really important-especially with frontees- to not let them over-exert themselves. What has also helped us are core strengthening exercises to help keep any stress or strain from the remaining leg best as can be.

I did try a small brace just to see how that would go and my dog seemed not to be able to walk with it at all so I guess we're staying brace-less 😊

Thank you all for the replies and thanks to those who looked at the video. I had no idea her carpal joint is already extending. I was expecting to face these kind of issues in a few years, not 4 months post amputation. The physio recommended the CarpoLock but that might just be a case of what she can get her hands on.
