Tacoma; One Year Post Cancer Amputation and Still Going Strong

My friend Glenn just gave us this sad news about his beloved Tacoma, who we wrote about last November. Tacoma had a wonderful, hoppy life for almost two years after having his amputation done by the good doctors at UC Davis, the same place where I had mine.

"Last Tuesday, June 24th, I had to let my Tacoma go.

Tacoma was a blue merle smooth collie who had been a tripawd since
September of 2006. His osteosarcoma finally metasthesized and ended up
in his lungs and lymph system.

Here is his website: http://gms57tr3.....com/tacoma

I will always miss him, he was my heart dog.

For anyone experiencing pet loss, go to rainbowbridge.com. There is a lot of stuff there for the human survivor."

Glenn, thank you for the links. You and Tacoma are in our thoughts, and we are sending our love out to you.

Greif hits at unexpected moments.

Years ago we had had our 2 sheltiies cremated and we had buried their ashes in an unused part of the yard, under a granite slab.  With Tacoma's passing, we decided that we wanted to move them to an area we had landscaped and  spent more time in.  When I dug them up, I had forgotten that I had burried a favorite tennis ball with one of them.  I cried more over the tennis ball than I did over just digging them up.

They will soon be joined by Tacaoma's ashes, who will be burried with one of my socks.  Tacoma's way of telling me I needed to give him some attention was to go and get one of my socks to play with.

On the granite slab will be rememberances of all 3 dogs on brass plaques, little things that made them special.

Today the Vet called to let me know that there was someone coming in with some Mini Aussie puppies.  I am not ready for another dog yet, but the pups were born yesterday and I wanted to make contact with the breeder.

I figured I would be ok, but just being in the waitting room made me cry because I was there without Tacoma.  The Vet's staff has been fantastic during the last 2 years and all of them knew Tacoma and knew what I was going through.  They even brought me a box of kleenex.

Tacoma is always going to be with me.  I have a friend who thinks that he will be back with me as another dog someday.  We will see.

Oh Glenn, your story brought tears to our eyes. Please know we are thinking of you. Take it one step at a time, buddy. Be good to yourself, and know that the sadness will subside eventually and give way to remembering all of the good times with that beautiful boy of yours.

I'm so sorry to hear of Tacomas passing Frown

Glenn - what your friend said about him being back with you one day as another dog made me smile. We lost one of our greyhounds to bone cancer in July 2005. He was only 4 years old and it wasn't possible for him to have an amputation due to the location of the tumour. On the day we had to have Maddison put to sleep, we were waiting for the vet and I was laying on the floor with Maddison, chatting to him and giving him 'instructions' about who to look for when he got to Rainbow Bridge. One of the last things I said as the vet did his work was to tell Maddison not to dare send me another greyhound (as we were 'full'). Maddison followed my instructions and sent me a Deerhound instead LOL. Maddison always had a great sense of humour and it must have tickled him terribly to send a deerhound pup. This pup (Duffy, who turned 3 on 31st May) never met Maddison (obviously) but has *so* many of his strange little traits and foibles that we've always said that he has part of Maddison within him. Duffy does things that only Maddison - out of all our large pack - ever did.  It's strange, but it's true.

Darcy – tripawd since 16th October 2007.

***Darcy would love to be your friend on Facebook - just search for Darcy Deerhound***

Glenn - they get into our hearts and souls...thank you for sharing with us your story and some helpful links; inevitably, we will all feel your pain and it's very kind and thoughtful of you to take the time to provide us with some tools when we'll need them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I love the story of Maddison - Zeus is still with me happy, healthy and no signs of mets yet, but I know the day will come and I pray he comes back around to me.

Love to all ~

Heather
