Oh Peg.....you are so cute!  It is harder to see Ugly in this pic but they both look like healthy, happy pups.

Peg is now officially 4 mo old.  She is adapting well to her handicap, and man oh man can she move fast on our non slip tile floors.  I have noticed that when she is presented with new surfaces she is very cautious and hesitant to move.  Concrete you would think wouldnt be much different from no slip tile, but it must be a texture feel thing for Peg under her paws.  Since all dogs lead with the front legs, that one front leg must have extra sensory perception or something.

Due to the commitment of raising two litters of pups from two feral moms (Pegs mom n Pegs grandma) and the hot hellish summer heat here in Phoenix, Peg and Ughy havent gotten out and about anywhere yet, they rarely go outside because Ughy has breathing issues and the heat here would murder him.

So here is my next challenge, Leash Training Peg, if I were to take her out anywhere she needs to be leash trained, in the house its easy to scoop her up or corral her when we want to relocate them, but outside she would get used to the terrain under her feet and Go Speed Racer Go, and she is off.....

I am not sure what sort of method to use, I think a collar attached to a leash on a pup missing a front leg would throw her off balance and potentially have her fear leash and collar due to it being an uncomfortable experience for her. So im guessing its a harness which will have to be designed to meet her specific needs.

My husband wants to keep Peg, but my feelings are that she deserves so much more, I rescue dogs, it is what I do, It's a God thing, and who am I to argue with him. Rescuing dogs is a sometimes thankless tiring task, because I am currently unemployed and searching for my next career and not just a job, I am not in a position to afford the upcoming costs of Pegs needs.

I am also now saddled with Pegs mom and Grandma whom are both feral. I contacted Best Friends but they do not take feral dogs. I got them spayed, that was interesting to say the least, but I learned a couple things about them that were positive when we had to handle them to weigh them and a simple exam before they were fixed.  They arent aggressive, they dont bite, add that to being great with other dogs, and manageable in their day to day routines.  I am not in a position to keep them separate on my property and try to rehab them.

All of this takes away from allowing others that need an outlet to land here. I took these two moms in and their 11 pups total born here because I had the time and the help of the rest of the rescue community.  However I was taken advantage of by a local rescue group whom offered to take pups to their adoption events made a nice profit, tried to bs me into saying they were barely breaking even, and I called em on it.  They profited after expenses approx $1300 and asked me what I had invested and then copped an attitude over my expenses of $100 a month for 13 dogs for 3 months. I was counting on having a little bit of recovery from adoption fees to provide for the needs of the four I still have, vaccinations for peg and ughy, getting moms fixed. It was ugly to say the least and has pretty much left a bad taste in my mouth.

These are the times I am embarrassed to be part of the human race, and the rescue world.

I believe I saw a link somewhere to Tripawds avail for adoption?

Is there links to leash training as well?

Wow...what a frustrating experience you've had with a rescue group.  I too did not have a good experience with a Doberman rescue group in my area.  Long story short they denied me and my husband as adopters because our prior dog was not on heartworm prevention (vets never explained to us how dogs got it...we assumed it was from eating dead rotting animals).  We live on 4 acres of fenced property and our previous dog lived indoors and even slept in bed with us.  Not to mention the thousands of dollars we spent in repairing both his knees due to cranial cruciate ligament tears.

I had to follow up with the rescue because it's like they fell off the face of the plant because we never heard anything after the home check.  They told me we were denied because our previous dog wasn't on heartworm prevention and they couldn't take the chance that we wouldn't follow through with keeping the adopted dog on heartworm prevention.  So I told them you just lost out on what would have been a wonderful home for one of your dogs.  Their response was "that happens some times."

So that's how Leland came to be with us...we purchased him from a breeder.  I guess it worked out for the best because he sure did need me and my husband because he was pretty sickly from the time we brought him home.

And since Leland's passing we have purchased another Dobie boy named Lucian from a breeder.

I'm sure there are good rescues out there but we won't attempt to deal with one again.

I'm sorry that you've been left carrying all the financial burden for the good work you're attempting to do.

Oh and I did want to say I'm glad Peg and Ughy are doing well.  It's just a testament to the hard work you've put in at taking care of them.

We think the Tripawd Convert by Ezydog for is the best walking harness for three legged dogs.
