Thank you Sally - I've been thinking of you - when I snuck her some Easter candy, I thought of Happy Hannah :)  You and she taught me how to enjoy those (often forbidden) treats.

Her Easter basket was not a big hit - she doesn't seem to know what to do with toys - I don't think she's ever even played with a ball (sad) - but food & candy - she was all about that!

The new med. combination is working great so far.  No Tramadol - just Meticam and the Gabapentin.  She still isn't super hungry in the morning but does eat.  Fingers crossed but I think we've turned a big corner!

What a wonderful update - with pics of a very happy Dolly Momma celebrating Easter with her family :)

Glad you found the right combination of meds for Dolly Momma - that can really make all of the difference.

YEY!  I'm so glad you listened to your gut and went with your girl for a miniroad trip!  Very exciting!  And probably tiring, too.  I mean, to pose for such gorgeous photos, bask in the love and warmth, enjoy some special easter treats?  That's hard work!

My parents rescued a dog who also didn't play.  She had no interest.  It kind of made us wonder if she's happy not knowing what to do with a ball?  A dog that doesn't play...is that a fulfilled dog?  I say YES!  B/c there is SO MUCH MORE to loving life than a squeeky toy!  Also, since she's been through so much and she's still new to you, it may take time.  If I remember correctly, Jackson didn't restart tug-o-war until maybe a month out from amp.  She needs to build her bond with you and her body, probably, before she may play.  Time, my dear, time.

SOOOOO glad her pain meds are better controlled.  EXCELLENT!  I hope you 2 have a grand day!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Oh, Dolly...you look like one supremely happy lady. That second picture seems to show her forming the word HOPPY.

Our next door neighbors rescued a five year old Gilden Retriever who was used as a breeder in a puppy mill. She, too, didn't have a clue what to do when we tossed a ball for her. Imagine a Golden who didn't know how to retrieve. She still, seven years later, doesn't retrieve or play with our dogs, but she is a happy, happy girl. So of Dolly says that chasing a ball just isn't her thing, that's just the way it is. After all, if she brought it back to you, she would just have to go after it again, wouldn't she? That is one smart girl. She is just avoiding all that useless work!

Thanks for giving us this great update. Keep those great pictures coming.

Kathi and Murphy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Thanks for the comments - I know one thing that encouraged me on my first day here was the photos of all of your Tripawds looking happy, doing normal things with you and your family, and to actually try to visualize how D.M. would look as a Tripawd.  So - here are a few more photos from our Easter picnic with her.

She is not easy to photograph because she wants to be right up against you.  If she is lying still and you walk up pointing a camera at her - she will get up and come over to you!   One of the many things I love about her.

These are pretty good considering she's not a poser.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. She looks great and happy!

Good job on adjusting the meds- it is not easy to do and it sounds like you have a good mix now.

I adopted quad-pug Obie when he was 4 years old, he had not been treated well by his original owner.  When I would try and toss a toy he would duck like I was going to hit him.  Grrrrr! And he never would chase anything I threw.  He had clearly never had a bone or chew toy because he didn't know how to hold one.  We worked on it and now he does play and chase but only with selected toys.  And his chew bones are one of his favorite things to do!  It took a lot of patience to get this far- I'm sure you can teach The Dolly how to play.

Keep up the good work!

Karen - doesn't that break your heart when they flinch from something?  And you realize it brought back a bad memory of being (possibly) mistreated. My husband is disabled and walks with a cane. I can't tell you how many fosters have jumped when he picked up his big old cane :(     I see that a lot as a foster mom.  I will continue to introduce her to toys and see if anything looks interesting to her.

I couldn't understand that she didn't respond to a peanut butter stuffed kong.   Now I know she doesn't care for peanut butter. She has the oddest palate for a coonhound!  She doesn't care for American or cheddar cheese but will light up for Provolone.  Isn't that funny?

I am heading back to  vet today to get a refill of the Meticam and figure out how/when to start reducing the 2 remaining meds.  It's hard to make myself take her off anything if she is doing well and seems comfortable.  But I know the goal is (eventually) to get her off everything if possible.

This morning - she is happy - hungry - and all is well in our little world :)

Hi Cindy,
Yes, as a foster you probably have seen too much! I knew Obie had been neglected, and his foster mom said he had been hit, but I didn't realize how damaged he was. I had never met a dog who didn't know how to hold a bone!

Dolly sure has a discriminating palette! One of the saving graces with Obie is his food drive- he really comes out of his shell for food.

Happy and hungry...all sounds good.
