So I've moved over - hope this is the correct forum for us - as Dolly Momma (thankfully) does not have cancer but her amp. was due to an untreated broken leg when she was 11 months old.

We are rejoicing to be done with this week.  It was rough! That phantom pain is a nasty business... but thanks to the good information here - we got her started on the Gabapentin which has been a life saver.  It seems to be working at full strength now as she has gone 24 hours with an "episode".

She felt well enough to sun herself in my neglected flower bed this morning.... it is hard to get good pictures of her as she wants to be glued to my side!  Plans are to take her to visit my kids for an Easter picnic next weekend.  Hopefully we can get some good photos - my son has a "good" camera and skills :)

These are my attempts - wishing everyone a great weekend with their sweet Tripawds!!

Awww, that face...and those eyes! So wonderful to hear that Dolly Momma is a tripawd due to a broken leg and not due to the dreaded 'c' word. So very happy for you, Cindy...and Dolly Momma is one lucky girl.

I'm with you on the miracles of Gabapentin. I thought for sure we were going to lose Lexie the night she was in so much pain and distress and refusing treats that we went to the ER vet at 2 a.m. They started her on Gaba then and I have no doubt that it helped save her life. When we went in her eyes were telling me "This is unbearable and I'm ready to go." After the Gaba (and a few other things) her eyes told me, "Okay, I think I can fight this thing."

When she attempted to chase a squirrel less than 48 hours later that was icing on the cake.

Two other great things about Gaba...it's relatively cheap in the scheme of things, and it's in a capsule and much easier (for me, at least) to get her to take it.

Cheers to modern medicine and great vets...and to a long and beautiful life for Dolly Momma!

So glad she is doing better. You can just drown in those eyes and her beautiful soul shines thru them.

It seems that they become velcro dogs with their primary caregiver after going through this and it seems to become even tighter as time goes by.

Thanks for sharing he pictures.

Good news Dolly Momma is on a good track with feeling better. It's unfortunate the loss of the leg was for those reasons but better it isn't cancer for sure. She should continue to do well. She's a lucky girl with you.

We are off to the vet visit in a couple of hours - sutures to be removed and general check up on everything.

Questions about her pain meds and when/how to wean her off of some of those.  I am nervous about the Gabapentin as I know that has been keeping those horrible phantom pain episodes at bay.  She prescribed a month's supply so I imagine we won't be getting off of that anytime soon.

Must share that as perfect as Dolly Momma is in all other ways - she is a real stinker about taking pills.  I'm used to "hiding" pills in fresh hamburger, cheese, etc.  and having most dogs just scarf them down.  Not her!  She carefully takes the treat - then spits it out on the floor, and carefully licks it off, leaving the pill. I've tried every desirable treat, fresh meat, cheese, luncheon meat, etc. I can think of.     The same with her food..... I tried hiding them in her soft food - which is mixed with kibble.  She cleans the bowl and the pills are sitting in the bottom.  SO..... I have to hold her head, place the pill way down her throat (almost making her gag) and then hold her mouth until she swallows.  If it is even 1/4" too high on her tongue - she will move it around, keep it in her mouth - indefinitely - until I release her head - then spit it out.  I can only assume her keen sense of smells alerts her to any hidden objects in her food and she refuses to eat them.  This is only a problem because she takes 8 pills a day - plus a squirt of Medicam (which is not problem).

Fingers crossed that we can eliminate a few of those during this week.

I'll report back later today/tonight!!

Good luck at the vet today!

Maggie was just like that with pills- when she found pills in food she wouldn't even eat that food for weeks!  And she would hold a pill in her mouth for several min. until I put her down, then she would spit it out.  It must have tasted horrible, but she would rather do that than swallow.  My other pugs wolf down everything.  But even if Tani finds her pill and spits it out, she will watch me put it back in a meat-ball and will take it again!

What about peanut butter?  Scoop a tablespoon or so onto the spoon and jam the pills in there.  Jackson is too busy licking, licking, licking the butter off the spoon to notice there were pills.  Got to put enough on there and make it messy enough that it takes MANY licks to get that spoon clean.

Down the hatch they go!

We're home!!!!

All good news. The incision is healed up and all sutures removed. She is taking her off of the Medicam first (naturally, the easiest one to give....but also the most $$$) continue the Tramadol for a week- then keep her off the Tramadol for a week - then we will slowly wean her off the Gabapentin. Sounds like a plan! So at least 2+ more weeks of slimy fingers twice a day  (The vet said they had to do the same thing with her - stick pills back in her throat and wait for her to swallow). Dolly Momma seemed very relieved that we brought we back home instead of leaving her there for a 4th surgery~~~ (last 3 trips - spay, amputation, removal of necrotic tissue at wound site).

I will try all of your suggestions.  I figured out that it was the scent - so I've tried covering it VERY well - washing my hands, etc.  I can give her a piece without a pill first and she takes it and eats it without any delay.  But - the ones with pills - "the Nose Knows!!"   Someone in my rescue group suggested Liver Sausage - I never knew there was such a thing...so I may see if I can find that. I already tried peanut butter - she is not a fan even without a pill.  She is a funny girl - she prefers cooked meat to raw - doesn't like cheese.  Considering a few months ago she was starving, with all of her ribs and hip bones showing - it didn't take long to become a picky connoisseur  🙂
