Hello,

I have a senior husky who needs to have a front leg amputation because of a spindle-cell tumor mid-leg. I just got the itemized estimate from my vet in Manhattan Beach and the low end estimate they gave was $4,200 and the high about $4,700 (this includes a chest x-ray). It was definitely a bit of a shock and from what I've seen from searching around there seems to be a large variable in how expensive the surgery is. If there is anyone in the Los Angeles area who can share some recommendations or experience, I'd appreciate it.

Oh gosh I'm sorry for the diagnosis. Sticker shock along with it is a double whammy for sure.

Have you looked into City of Angels Specialty Center?

Yes, there is a huge variation in surgery costs based on geographic location. Unfortunately in Southern California, the cost you've been quoted is about the going rate for a high quality specialty center. Sure, you can get a lower price at a general practice clinic, but you really want to be sure they are offering the same level of care that a specialty center does. Here's an article we wrote a while back about price shopping for amputation surgery. I hope it helps. Let us know what you decide and keep us posted on your boy, he's quite a looker!

Thanks Jerry!  I'll look into the center you mentioned. The estimate I got was actually from a general practice clinic. I'll keep you posted.

Yes do look into them, they are great! We've had many members give them rave reviews and one of their oncologists, Dr. Turner, is a good friend of our community. Let us know what you find.

Here's one more thing to consider: finding an AAHA clinic. If you're unfamiliar with why they rock, here's an article for you:

Did you end up finding someone to go with and could I ask what it cost? I live near Manhattan Beach and my 65 lbs American Staffordshire Terrier needs a rear leg Amputation. I can't afford the 5k I've been seeing around for the area. 😭
