Hi everyone - just wanted to share our experience with the vet/clinic that was involved with our dog's amputation surgery (osteosarcoma).

Dr. Oakley is a board certified orthopedic surgeon at M.A.S.H (Mid-Atlantic Specialty Hospital) in Huntingtown, MD who recommended and performed Arya's amputation surgery. There is also a board certified surgical oncologist that works there who assisted with her care. I have been impressed with them since day 1 which was unfortunately the day we found out she had osteosarcoma. Dr. Oakley had great bedside manners and all the staff members from the vet tech to the receptionist shared encouraging stories with me of dogs they knew that had an amputation. Our dog was able to come home the day after surgery with 5 days of antibiotics and 2 weeks worth of gabapentin and carprofen. She also got trazadone as needed. Her incision looked amazing from day 1 and healed beautifully ; did not need any suture removal as none were used externally.  They followed up with me next day and gave me a direct line to call if any concerns came up at home. Extremely responsive and great communication.

The hospital also has a rehab department if needed. Luckily we did not require it but I have heard great things about their rehab program there as well.

Total cost of surgery (for 9yo Australian Shepherd weighing 45lbs) was $3024.76 which included all post-op meds and histopathology for the removed leg. They have you pay half on surgery day and remaining half on pick up. They were upfront about cost estimates prior to surgery when we decided to go through with amputation.

Thanks for sharing Jenny! That sounds like the ideal experience and the cost is amazing. Very nice team it sounds like.
