Hi everyone, thanks for having this place for those of us going through this with our dogs. Sky is a 14-year-old Yellow Labrador with a mass on one lower back leg that has gotten worse. She is going for a consultation tomorrow at Port City Vet Referral Hospital to see the options, but I am pretty sure she will need to lose that bad leg. Luckily, she has no arthritis, and her hips are still great, but this had to come down the pipe and hit her, unfortunately. I still count my blessings.
I was very worried about this, as people would give most of her age, but otherwise, she has been doing so well and still has lots of energy and life even with a bad injury. It is comforting to hear how well seniors can do post-surgery. This summer, she was still jumping off the dock and fetching, swimming, and having fun. Like most people here, we adore our dog, and she gets at least one walk a day, if not more, and is in excellent physical condition, so I do have plenty of hope that this won't be the end for her.
If anyone has had a good experience in the Boston / New Hampshire area with a hospital or surgeon and could let me know, I would appreciate it. Right now, it is between Port City and Angell in Boston. Thanks again for this place and others like it.

Feel free to start a new topic in Size and Age Matters if you'd like, so we can get to know Sky better and help out. It sounds like she is probably a good candidate for surgery. For so many pets, age is just a number!
It's funny you mentioned Port City today. I just talked to someone on the Tripawds Helpline who is taking their cat to a clinic that is also part of the Ethos Pet Health network of clinics. What I told him was the his clinic, like Port City, looks like a great referral center. Lots of vets with tons of excellent experience.
However, neither clinic is AAHA-accredited , which is super important to us here at Tripawds. If I had to choose between a clinic that is AAHA-accredited and one that is not, AAHA wins every time. Angell in Bostin is an AAHA clinic. The link will explain more in case you aren't familiar with why we feel this way. We've had tons of members here have their amputation and oncology done at Angell (it's known worldwide) and I can't recall any dissatisfied pet parents.
But hopefully others can chime in here, since we have never had direct experience with either clinic. Thanks for asking!

Thanks for the reply! You can move this post to that forum if you wish; if you can't, I can repost over there. I also had no idea about the AAHA accreditation. I had a great experience at Angell, and I think that is the hospital I will use for the procedure. Thanks again for all the great info.

We didn't know about AAHA until many years after Jerry's amputation. We are so glad we know now.
