Hello All,

Zepplin wanted me to update everybody, as he has appreciated your thoughts so far.  He underwent his R forelimb amputation on 6/26 (1 week before his 11th birthday).  The surgery went well, inscision has healed nicely.  He went for his follow up with the surgeon yesterday to have sutures removed, and the initial consult with the oncolgist.  He began chemo yesterday, 1 treatment of one drug every 3 weeks, followed by one treatment of a second drug once every 3 weeks for a total of 6 treatments possibly followed by metronomic therapy.  No evidence of lung mets or any other metastisis at this point.  Later that day we had an intial eval with a rehab vet, and got lots of pages of homework exercises (his dad is a PT so that is good I guess), and we'll be doing underwater treadmill training for a few weeks as well.  Then today we had an appointment with a holistic vet and got about 600 vitamin, suppliment, and other pills to give him every day (good thing he thinks pill pockets are treats and we're encororating that into his home exercise program).  We are trying to cover all conventional and non-traditional bases.  We're cooking his cancer diet food which he loves, and starting to get him moving a bit more.  He figured out the stairs and dog door in the first week.  He didn't really want to drink water, and just started yesterday.  His right back leg is a little smaller and weaker than the left so we'll be working on a lot of strength, range and balance.  His first real walks were today, but he got pretty pooped after about 100-200 feet and didn't seem interested in walking, more in laying down and eating grass.

He still seems to sleep a lot (most of the time,) and has brief periods where he seems more himself, but still seems really tired and down/ depressed.  He's not on any pain meds anymore and we are tapering him off of Gabapentin.  We've had a few hearbreak moments: one when I gave him a half of a hamburger and usually he would run around, throw it on the ground and ponce on it, knock it around with his nose.  He couldn't figure out what to do, he just stood there and whined.  Another time I gave him a stick to chew, and normally he would wedge it between his two paws to chew on it, and I couse see he was trying to use the arm that wasn't there and he just gave up and put his head down/ lost interest.  He also really liked to dig in the dirt and lay down in it, and he just kind of stares at the old hole like he doesn't know what to do.  I really hope he figures those things out, he always loved those things the most.

All that being said all of the vets caring for him are really impressed with his rate of progress, and although he seems down still, we can tell the pain behaviours aren't there any more.  He is so far a rock star.  I have some great video of him hopping around, but can't really load it on this discussion board I don't think...

Thanks for all of your help so far.

Oh yeah, he is down to 87 pounds too, from 100.  Everybody seems happy with this weight.

Wow! What a great update! Zepplin ROCKS and is really getting the most excellent care. AND losing weight too? YAY!

What a lucky boy! I'm sure you will find that as the weeks go by he will figure things out. Rehab vets have told us that the important thing is to normalize your life together; try not to dwell on what he cannot do right now, or give him too much attention when he seems frustrated or gives up. Treat it like any other time in his life, and let him know that you won't baby him, he has to do it himself. It's tough love, and it's hard, but it will help him believe in himself once he sees that you do too.

Fear not, front leggers DO figure things out. From chewing bones to digging holes, they get their groove back and learn how to redo these things. Time is what you need right now, and that rehab therapy will definitely help! Check out our YouTube Channel for videos of front leggers doing all sorts of things.

And speaking of video...all you need to do is paste the URL within your forum post. Like this

We would love to hear more details about his treatments. Would you be interested in writing a guest blog post? If so, contact us through the PM system.

6/26 is really not all that long ago in the scheme of things - especially for a "more mature" pup. I think you'll see him continue to improve. Many here with older/larger pups found that it took a bit longer than the usual 2 weeks to see their old pups fully back. Hopefully with continued TLC, he'll get there!

The weight loss is good news too - it will make it easier for him to get around. Treats all around to celebrate! Oh no, wait... that's all wrong... Well - maybe if the treats are vegetables... big-grin

Keep us posted,

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. YAY for Zepplin!  Sounds like he is doing amazingly well!  Keep the faith, I think each dog progresses at their own pace...each day gets better and better and you will see more of the 'old' Zep reappear with each passing day!

Lily is 9 years old and is just a tad more than 6 weeks post amputation of her left leg because of osteosarcoma.  Lily slept a lot too and initially wasn't interested in activities that she used to love (playing tug o war with her Staffie sister Belle, chewing deer antlers and bully sticks and chasing the 'evil' rabbit in the back yard).  I knew Lily would come through though when she chased and caught (just for a second) the 'evil' rabbit in the backyard - something she had never accomplished on 4 legs!  It took about 4 weeks for her, but she is back to being the 'old' Lily I know and love!

GO ZEP GO!!!

Allison and Lily

Lily is 9 y/o Shepherd/Lab/Pit mix who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma 5/26/2012. Left front ampuversary 5/29/12. Eastern and Western medicine used to attack the cancer. Splenectomy secondary to mets 8/24/12. Mets to right rear femur, neck and lungs 9/21/12. Sweet Lily fought hard for 4 months and earned her wings on 9/27/12. Run free and chase those squirrels my love bug!

All is all, it sounds like he's doing pretty well!  Don't forget that the chemo also makes some dogs tired, so even though he's off most pain meds, that might be wearing him out a little bit...and his surgery really wasn't all that long ago!  I would say he had a seriously big day - sutures out, starting chemo, and an initial consult with a physical therapist all in one day  - whew!  I don't know if I could have kept up, but it sounds like he managed all of that pretty well.

It does take some getting used to for them, but he'll figure it out.  Holly loved chewing on deer antlers and one of my favorite things was when she figured out how to chew on them with only one front paw.  Once she got it down, it was no problem...just took a little time.

It's great that you are going ahead and getting started with rehab (probably helps that he has a PT dad!).  It seems like a good idea to do it right away to help them adjust - we thought about it and were going to do it once Holly started having some trouble, but we didn't do it at first because she seemed to be doing well...but I think that doing it preemptively before there are any problems is the best way to go.

Good luck Zep and pack!

Thanks guys, he's doing a little better every day still.  Day 5 after chemo, and other than a little fatigue, he hasn't had any nausea or vomiting.  He is starting to want to go out a bit more, and is interested in laying in the front yard eating grass but is still not super interested in walking.  He actually, just sat down and refused to move when I tried day before yesterday, so I'm backing off on that a bit.  I might try again and incorperate some treats as he is EXTREMELY food and treat motivated.  Our rehab vet recommended a velcro brace for his remaining front carpus as he already has some arthritis in that "wrist" and it seems to have helped him get around on that front leg better.  It's called a Carpo-Flex by Thera-Paw.  It's pretty adjustable and you can customize the support based on what problem they are having.

here is a link:

http://www.ther.....aps-1.aspx

We are using his Ruffwear harness some, but mostly just to get him in and out of the car.  He doesn't seem to need it to get up and down or on the couch at all.

He's also starting to get some of his "silly" back occasionally, running around with boneys.  He loves rawhide bones and it's a HUGE quality of life thing for him, so we're trying to get ones that we don't think have been soaked in nasty solutions.

He is currently taking about 30-40 supplement pills a day 🙁  Does anybody know a good supplier of quality bone meal and fish oil that is not in capsules??  That would be about 12 less pills for him...

Thanks for the interest and support so far!  We definitely had our moments but do not regret our decision, as he seems in much less pain than before the surgery already.

Lookin good Zep! Man, I am so impressed at how well you're getting along. Your phenomenal recovery is really inspawrational, especially for a senior pup. Sooo many pawrents will be comforted by seeing your progress. How about if you post an update in our "Size and Age Matters" topic sometime, just so new members can read about your experience from a senior dawg perspective?

I love how your folks put down runners on the deck. Pawesome!

Looking good, Zepplin! Glad to hear he is doing well.

We gave our Abby fish oil in a pill - but maybe try iherb.com. They might have a good high-quality liquid fish oil.

Keep us posted on how he's doing!
