Blaze came home doing great the first week. Eating, peeing drinking, pooping and lots of sleeping. Now he won't eat. This began Thursday on day 9. My hubby managed to get a few handfuls of kibble into him this morning. He won't eat his regular food. Won't take his pills with baloney or meatballs. Drinks a lot! Pooped ok, small volume. Is eating lots of grass.

Behavior says he wants to eat, drools. Wants affection, but snarks when had enough. Gets around ok, but not over doing.

So this morning he has not had any pain meds. We have an appointment tomorrow morning to remove the staples.

Thoughts?

Mary, sorry to hear he's going through this. Ups and downs aren't unusual, and if a dog is eating even a little after surgery and drinking things are probably OK but it can't hurt to mention it to your vet. Less than two weeks out still isn't very long. I'm curious if he's out of pain meds or if he just hasn't had them because you want to see if that helps to restore his appetite?

What's his incision like? Does that look normal and not irritated? When you give him affection and pet him, does any part of his body seem to hurt? If you can check his temperature, that might rule out a fever/infection.

These are just some thoughts.  I hope it helps. Keep us posted.

Jerry he has plenty of pain meds on hand. Blaze just refuses to take them in the customary manner, stuffed in a heated meatball or rolled in cold cuts. He just has no appetite, not enthusiastic about any treat and spits it out. I did manage to get him to eat a frozen yogurt Dogsicles that I make for the pups.

His incision site looks great, no signs of infection or redness. He doesn't appear to be in pain. Blaze has always been an unpredictable anxious grump which is why he saw Dodman years ago and is on Prozac.

His affect is alert, tail wagging, sleeps like a snoring log.

Its something I will mention tomorrow. I worry about unexpected liver or kidney issues. I also worry about other tumors even though his lungs were clean the day of surgery.

I wish they could talk!

Thanks for those pilling tips which I a certain work for the average uncooperative dog. The advice in the video is far too dangerous to try with Blaze! I cannot muscle him into anything! I routinely use a muzzle for flea and tick administration. He is not a golden golden. I have to use more psychology with him to prevent bites.

Okay, first of all this is probably just the normal u and down part of thi crazy roller coaster ride called "recovery." I'm no vet...and you are going to one tomorrow, but I really doubt that this is anything serious at all!

It does seem that it could be pain related and/or tummy gasro upset, especially if he's eating grass.

My Happy Hannah ended up being on pain meds for about three weeks. This only after I had tried to taper off by the two week mark, because that's what "most dogs" do...not my Hannah!

So a really good thing to try regarding pain meds...or any meds. Tramadol is apparently one of THE most bitter pills in the world...according to dogs!!

Get some turkey liverwurst...or any liverwurst.......use tweezers to insert the pill into a pile of loverwurst....do not let the pill scent get on your hands or anywhere on the "exterior" of your liverwurst ball....cover it up really well, again, making sure your hands don't touch the pill, and keep it completely hidden deep in the loverwurst.

Good luck!! And keep us posted after Blaze's vet appointment. Blaze sounds like a very spunky fellow with a whole lot of strong will! And that can be plises on this journey, even for a "non Golden Golden"!

Looking forward to hearing more about this amazing boy!

Hugs to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

PS...Don't k n ow if he lokes car rides, but a drive through burger may be just what he needs...with extra cheese!!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Mary,
So sorry you have hit a little bump in the road with Blaze, but like others have said, this can be pretty normal in the healing process.....but yeah, a vet check up will probably ease your mind.

I know I have had to use an appetite stimulant for my Polly, ( mostly for chemo sickness issues ) but your guy may just need a little boost to help him out. Now, since he is not taking any of his pills, that could be a problem, but one that can hopefully be worked out. Maybe he just needs a bit of time to get past this, as long as he is drinking, that is a huge plus. It seems with him eating grass, that he may be a bit nauseated.

Hope this all works out soon, and he is back to eating well....please keep us posted on how he is doing and what the vet says.

Love,
Bonnie & Angel Polly
