We have had Kolbe on Palladia for 5 months and he is doing very well.  To control GI side affects, our onco prescribes Pepcid and Metoclopramide 10mg 3/day and he has had GI problems.  Now, I do prepare their food myself and of meat is raw and organic.  The Palladia is costing $600/month and I am searching for a cheaper source.  I have found an online pharmacy for veterinary practices (Vets First Choice) which is significantly cheaper.  Also, California Pet Pharmacy which is accredited, but it is so cheap that it worries me!  Anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks for the link!

We always recommend people only purchase medication online from Vet-VIPPS accredited pharmacies. The NABP has a directory of Vet-VIPPS pharmacies.

Hi All - I have a greyhound recently diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma, prescribed Palladia as part of her treatment.  Researching where to buy on-line, and have found that most of the on-line companies are out of stock, and have no idea when they will get more.  "Entirely Pets Pharmacy" has a link for "Kinavet-CA1" as "a cost effective alternative to Palladia".

Has anyone heard anything about this drug or any experience with it vs. Palladia?

Hi CBB, welcome. Sorry to hear about your Grey. Have you talked to your vet about Palladia sources? Usually vets totally understand the high cost of this treatment and are willing to go above and beyond to get it as inexpensively (and safely) as possible.

As for Kinavet-CA1, Dr. Dressler and Ettinger discuss it here in the Dog Cancer TV blog. I feel entirely comfortable saying that if they give it a paws-up, it's worth a try. Dr. Ettinger says:

Dr. Susan Ettinger: So, Kinavet is in the same class of drugs such as Palladia. So, they’re both secret inhibitors. So, they’re both in this a new evolution of anticancer drugs called targeted therapy. What’s interesting and exciting about Kinavet is that, if your dog was on palladia and has developed a resistance or is not tolerant to it, you could try to other one. They have slightly difference, the effect and receptors. So, again there is reason to think that if your pet is resistant to one and you can try the other and it may still have some efficacy.

Here's some other info:

Veterinary Practice News: Mastocytoma Drug Gets Conditional OK

Kinavet-CA1 joins Pfizer Animal Health’s Palladia (toceranib phosphate), the first FDA-approved drug specifically for the treatment of cancer in dogs. Palladia, approved in 2009, also belongs to the tyrosine kinase inhibitor class of compounds.

While both drugs are targeted therapies, the mechanisms of action are different, Ahn noted.

AB Science describes Kinavet-CA1 as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that targets mast cells, important cells for immunity, as well as a limited number of kinases that play key roles in various cancers.

“This drug is a targeted therapy,” Ahn said. “What this means is that it is specifically targeting receptors on the mast cell tumor in an effort to combat this disease.”

Older generation products or chemotherapeutic agents not only can damage the tumor, they may injure healthy tissue because they are nonspecific, he said. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors, on the other hand, are intended to be very specific in the mode of action.

I hadn't heard of this drug before, thanks for bringing it to our attention. Let us know what you find out.

You cannot buy Palladia over the counter, it is by prescription only. We were ordering ours through Costco and it was about $500 for 30 pills. I called Walmart and they did not carry it. Like a dumb bunny, I didn't start ordering it directly from Pfizer until the very end, and the direct cost is  about $300 for 30 pills. I believe you have to be in a specialty practice to order it though (like where your oncologist is at), and Pfizer was pretty persnickety about it. You aren't going to be able to call them directly to order it.

Wookie524 was there a special way that you were able to order Palladia through Costco?  My local Costco in Maryland is unable to order this form me and claims it is not in there system.  I have been getting mine through my vet oncologist, but they have just raised their prices, plus I have to pay a handling fee too.

Any information you have would be terrific!

Hi I know this post is from a long time ago but my 5 year old lab was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of mast cell cancer a few months ago and thank God he is actually responding well to the Palladia so far. The only thing is that we can barely afford the cost of the chemo drug through the oncologist the way we have been paying for it monthly. I saw this post in a search for any help with getting it cheaper. Would you happen to have any information about a number at Pfizer or a specific department to start the process?

I am so grateful for the information you shared. It gives us hope of continuing to treat our pup's cancer and keep him comfortable. smiley

Hi Sully's Mommy,

I'm happy to hear things are going well with Palladia. We know what a huge financial burden it is though, just so heartbreaking about how much it costs. And I'm so sorry, but that information about Palladia is very likely still correct. Wookie is a vet specialist, she knows these situations inside out and I honestly doubt anything's changed but it's good you're covering all your angles.

Have you talked to your vet about the situation? Most vets are willing to help clients find ways to cover costs.

Also, these links might help you connect with financial resource assistance:

If there's anything else we can do for you please don't hesitate to ask OK?

FYI if anyone is researching this topic, just learned that Kinavet-CA1 has been pulled by the FDA. Trying to get clarification on it from a vet, stay tuned.
