While I'm waiting to hear, I'll tell the story of what happened. Its probably good for me to write it for some reason.

Last night we went to bed and I put him up on the bed. He wanted to be up there so badly, and since I let him last night without a problem, I picked him up, put him on the bed and we went to sleep. A little after 2 a.m., he woke me up because he was moving. As I'm waking up and trying to figure out if he was just shifting or trying to jump off, suddenly he was off the bed and I heard a big thunk. I got to him in a second - he was lying on the floor, on his belly with his head up. Looked okay, but I was worried about his stitches, so I tried to roll him on his side to look at them. He started flailing, and I could barely hold him down.

I got him back on the bed, and it kept happening. I scooped him up - not easy, because he's big and kept kicking. I had to put him down a few times, but eventually made it to the car. I drove like a maniac to a local ER who were not helpful at all, basically said there was nothing they could do and I should take him back to the VCA. So off to VCA - since it was about 3 a.m. now I got there quickly.

The ER vet went over the possibilities, but I could tell he really thinks its a tumor. That is very hard for me to accept because he was fine until the fall. Since his diagnosis is uncertain, I decided he deserves another chance and so he's staying there to have an MRI. He will also see a neurologist. If it isn't a brain tumor, the other options all seem like they will resolve on their own with support.

I thought he hit his head and was having seizures. Both the tech at the first ER and the ER doc at VCA said they were not seizures, but what he was doing was vestibular instead. The first ER said he had a high temperature - at VCA they actually didn't know when I asked because they were so focused on his flailing. The vet noted he had a lot of bruising on his abdomen - it actually looks better than it did, so I don't know. He also mentioned it could be a stroke.

So I wait.

Taking my breath away reading this.  Rotten veyond words.

I see you're here now.  Is it POSSIBLE that when he fell off the bed he twiested his back...pi ched a nerve....did SOMETHING to his back????????    I knkw they sre thinking bad stuff, but I wouldn't rule that out at all!!!  Make sure they xray or scan his back.

Hang onto us.   Clyde is one tough dude!!!

I just feel in my gut that it has to do with the fall. Either a head injury or something - I kept trying to explain that he was FINE. The vet said that he probably fell because of the vestibular thing - I was like but he was sitting up fine on the ground, just looking around like what happened. It wasn't until I moved him that this all started.

I have so much guilt about having him on the bed. He never tries to get off without my help. And I just wanted him to be happy. He's been feeling so much better, had his spark back. And then to have him in a panic, his eyes looked terrified. This is just not the way I wanted things to end, if this is the end. He deserves better, but I guess they all do.

And certainly a high fever could cause issues that they can straighten out.

My older boy Bodie gell off the bed ine time and  exhibited so.e of the behavior you noted.  Cantw remeber exzctly, but maybe a slipped disc, muscles and neck strain, et.  Took complete rest and meds and was a day or two before he coukd walk .

We're with yiu and wa ting all the best for sweet Clyde.

I am at work. I am popping in and out as I am able. Happy Hannah is the banner here right now 🙂 All those furbabies above are routing for you also. I am not convinced that would all of a sudden do that either. Trauma? maybe. A good smack on the head may have done something for his equilibrium. Vestibular is not a brain tumor. And it is treatable. It is a lack of balance, I will have to go back and search it because it has been many years but I remember seeing a handful of pets with vestibular problems that resolved.

You got the whole tripawd nation sending you all the good juju that we can possibly send. I will stay logged in throughout the day, my heart just is aching for you right now.

Honest to goodness....I feel like your gut instinct is right!!!  I really do!!!

It sounds soooo much like what happened with my Bodie.  And I always tried ro help him down too, but he would do it on his own if I wasn't wuick enough for him.

He was flalling  too at first and couldn't stand.

And listen up!  You have enough on yoyr plate and do NOT need ro feel guilty about Clyde veing on the bed!!!!   IT MADE HIM SOOOOO HAPPU!!!  He needed ro be with yiu after all he'd been through!!  And IF...IF....IF.....it is a tumor, it would have happened if he had been sleeping on the floor but you wouldn't have realozed he was having "issues".' So erase those thoughts!!

So unless told otherwise, I also feel like it's related to the tumble and will resolve, but they need to focus on that and the temperature.

It does seem likely to be related to the fall, doesn't it? Or to the surgery. I know it's pointless to speculate, but I also know that it's impossible not to. I have more experience with brain tumours than I care to relate: my father, my first dog Billie, and currently my sister. Symptoms vary massively according to where the tumour is, but for what it's worth, there do seem to be a number of other possibilities here, and as Sally says, a fever could well cause issues. We are hoping against hope that this something that will resolve, with the right care and rest.

Thinking of you,

Yeah Jackie...that vesribular thing...Bodie jad that too!   Seperate time, but could jave been related.   Dizzy, walked @ike he was drunk, completely lff balance, falling.

That could jave caused him to fall off the bed and then that, plus disc, muscles, etc....yeah....all that is DEFINITELY  a possibility!!!

Hanf on!'

Totally agree!!  Do not feel bad about him being on your bed... oh my goodness, he was in heaven to finally be snuggling with you. Sheesh you guys have been through so much!! Please don't do that to yourself, you did nothing wrong, it was unforeseen.

If it is vestibular that we are talking about, here is some info, hope it helps.

"Vestibular Disease refers to a sudden, non-progressive disturbance of balance." It is more common in older dogs. It is also referred to as old dog vestibular syndrome and canine idiopathic vestibular syndrome.

I think Sally and Clare have the right idea.. focus on what you know and that isn’t a whole bunch unfortunately! Im so sorry that Clyde had to go through that episode! There really is no hope in speculating, so many things could be going on here... Clyde has had a heck of a week and so have you!!

My great Pyranese had multiple seizures (one every six months or so...) after she came to us, we had taken her in and the prognosis was thought to be a brain tumour. We had blood tests done, but nothing definitive. She was 8 years old at the time that we got her and taking her through to either Calgary or Vancouver for an MRI was not an option for us at the time. She was a massive girl and brain surgery wouldn’t have been an option either! Another major indicator that she had a brain tumour was that her eyes were ‘soft’. (Sorry Clare, i was trying to avoid putting this out there! I do hope Meg’s issue is not related!!!) We put her on medications for an infection, but time proved the prognosis to be correct!

As you can see, we all have different experiences due to the sizzlers, but a blood clot could make sense due to Clydes recent surgery... An infection could be the cause, or simply by falling off the bed, he caught a nerve??? Again, we aren’t your vets, they are the ones that will be able to tell you definitively. We are just trying to offer some rope for you to hang on to. Although my experience doesn’t add very good vibes does it! Im sorry, i just wanted to add what our experiences were with seizures!

We are all with you today and are hoping that the very best outcome is available to Clyde!!! All of our best wishes are with you!!!

Sending positive thoughts for you guys- I know how scary this is.

If he was moving before he fell off the bed it is very possible that he was having an episode of some kind that caused him to fall.  I'll wait until you get closer to a diagnosis before speculating.  The only thing they will be able to definitively say I think is that there is not a brain tumor.  I've dealt with seizures, vestibular disease and strokes and we were able to manage them, Tani had them all!

The cause of Tani's seizures was a congenital brain injury, but the only way to diagnose the vestibular disease and strokes was by the symptoms.

I'll be checking for an update.
