Well, I just left Jewel and things have gotten worse.  She has an infection.  They put her on an antibiotic and will be putting in a drain today.  They will flush the area as well.  They said her skin is degenrative?  It's from the infection.  How long do I put her through this?  One positive thing...she ate for me.  She still will not get up.Cry  I'm trying to be strong...

That's great you are trying to be strong.  It was very hard for me as well when things didn't go exactly as I had played it out in my head, but it is important to remember that our doggies can sense our feelings.  Jack also had to go on an antibiotic due to possible infection (he had broken some capillaries and had blood pooling in his abdomen), and pulled through like a trooper!  I wish the same for Jewel.  I wish I had advice on how long you wish to put her through this.  Just keep listening to the doctors and keep Jewel as comfy as can be.  From my own personal point of view, I would say its still waaay too early to tell since she's only 2 days out of surgery.  Every dog recovers at his or her's own rate, and most are likely to hit a few bumps along the road.  Keep us updated on her recovery!  <3

I'm going to ditto - hang in there. Wrigley developed complications on about day  6 of recovery- she was leaking a lot of blood from her incision- she literally had blood fountaining out of her incision. We had to take her to emergency as it was a Sunday and her surgeon was not available. They kept her overnight and called the next moring and were giving me options of possible blood tranfusions or reopening the site to see if there was something wrong within- all of that sent me spinning, but by then it was monday and we took her back to her surgeon ( who came in on his day off)  who kept her all day, put a compression wrap on this incision, monitored her blood count, put her on antiobiotics and an iron supplement to get the levels back up to where they should be. She recovered and was fine- as I am sure Jewel will too. I know it is hard to stay strong and positive at times like this when things aren't going as you think they should, but know we are all here helping you - picture all of us joining hands with you sending good positive thoughts to you and Jewel.

Has anyone told you yet what the vet who did Yoda's surgery told me?  It probably won't be any less stressful to know, but I was told that statistically dogs who get infections post-amp actually do better long term.  Yoda didn't end up getting an infection, so I don't have personal experience to offer, this little factoid just came up when he was answering questions pre-amputation.

Yoda&Mom united: 9/5/06 …….… Yoda&Leg separated: 6/5/09……… Yoda&Leg reunited: 10/14/09 ……… ……………….………….………….……. Yoda&Mom NEVER separated! …………………….….……....….…… Though Spirit Yoda currently free-lances as a rabbit hunting instructor for tripawds nationwide

YES! In fact, we just heard that yesterday from the operations director of the Colorado State University Animal Cancer Center!

Hang in there Patti. It sucks when things like this happen but as you can see, other Tripawds have done just fine after jumping these little hurdles. It's all just one big not-so-nice test to see how well you handle what life throws at you at a time like this. Remember, think more dog, and everything will be fine.

Our hands are joined too, we are thinking of you and Jewell. Keep us posted OK?
