Hello- my almost 14 year old Cairn terrier was diagnosed with a very quickly growing oral tumor about 3 months ago. The tumor was hard, we did x rays but never a biopsy so there was no official name for it. It was clear, however, that it was growing very fast. It quadrupled in size over those three months. it knocked out almost all of his front teeth. About 7 weeks into it, I noticed he was having a harder time eating kibble, so I switched him to a brand of food called "Happy Dog Food" that you have to cook ground turkey into. Now.. two weeks ago it was horrible looking. It looked red, inflamed, it bled, it looked like he was walking around with a cherry tomato in his mouth. A week ago I noticed it was looking smaller for some reason. I didn't ask questions, just happier it wasn't looking so bad. Now this week, its almost completely gone!! I have been taking photos and I will post them.

Now, I have NO idea what caused it to go almost completely away! Changing his diet was the only thing I did but it seems drastic to me to have that somehow make this big tumor just up and disappear! Has anyone else experienced this and can weigh in? or let me know what might be a good idea to do from now on? Should I take him back to the vet and pay the exam fee just to basically show them the progress and ask what could have caused it?

I went to TWO different vets and both were trying to convince me to do a surgery removing the mandibular jaw. There was no way I would put my dog through that- and NOW i'm so glad I didnt!!

I'm sure its possible it can come back, who knows.. we will see.

Hi and welcome. Sorry but your photos aren't posting. When you select them in Photobucket, you want to choose the "DIRECT IMAGE URL" in the right sidebar, then come here and paste that URL into the photo-icon that's in your post editing toolbar. Hope that makes sense. Here are more instructions for adding images.

Meanwhile, glad the tumor went away but I'm curious, did you get a pathology report? What kind was it?

If I was in this situation I would want to get the remission verified from an oncologist for peace of mind. Cancer doesn't play by the rules, you never know what it's doing until you get the right tests done.

Hopefully you won't have to deal with it any more and that's that.

You don't mention if your dog is a Tripawd? If so how did he lose his leg?

I wonder, since it wasn't biopsied, if it probably wasn't cancer and just some sort of oral cyst? I'm no vet but I'm happy for you!! I'd take him back too just to make sure it hasn't busted and he isn't in need of antibiotics or something.

I too have had a tumour that apparently shrunk itself. My dog had a rear leg amputated due to osteosarcoma about 16 months ago. I opted not to do chemo. At christmas he developed a hard lump on his side. It grew noticeably daily. We biopsied and it was diagnosed as a histocytic sarcoma (aggressive cancer). We were going to operate to remove it but an ultra sounds showed lumps on his liver and spleen (although he had a clear chest xray). He was given days possibly weeks to live at that point, so we didn't want to put him through another operation. The visible lump grew to about the size of a grapefruit, then.... started to shrink (with no treatment given). It is now barely visible, and 11 months later he is still going strong.

I guess occasionally we just get lucky and we are enjoying every extra day we have been given together.
