Gina, waaaaay cool, thank you! I feel a Tripawds Nutrition Blog Post coming up about this. Mind if I quote you there? Can we apoint you the "Tripawds Homeopathy Expert"? 🙂 I mean I know you're not a doc, but 15 years experience is most likely more than most of us have here.

I would so love to see Dr. Loops in person at a conference, you're so lucky.

Thanks for these great links, I'm going to go add them to our Resources Page right now!

Wow guys! Yes, of course I would love to be a Holistic Resourse for you all! Thank you Sister Tracy for such a good review! smiley9 Animals are, and will always be, my true passion in life. After working for a conventional veterinarian for 15 years, I decided to take my holistic hobby one step further; to move 4 hours south and work full time for a holistic veterinarian. I saw such a gap in quality of life between standard animal care and what people wanted for there animals. I knew I had to do something about it. You are all so wonderful here; you have such commitment to your pups and I honor that. What I find with holistic medicine is that the feeling of doing something supportive thru these hard times can do so much for our minds which in turn helps the animals. The thought of nuturing in a kind way such as nutrition, herbs, supplements or homeopathics can do so much for the animal suffering with the condition which in turn, helps our minds! A real bonus!!! Huggers to you all!

Oh, and a homeopathic rememdy I think of right away for all you Peeps out there, when your pup is post-op and you're filled with sadness or grief:

*Ignatia Amara

*

Produces a marked hyperaesthenia of all the senses, and a tendency to clonic spasms. Mentally, The emotional element is uppermost, and co-ordination of function is interfered with. Hence, it is one of the chief remedies for hysteria. It is especially adapted to the nervous temperament – women of sensitive, easily excited nature, dark, mild disposition, quick to perceive, rapid in execution. Rapid change of mental and physical condition, opposite to each other. Great contradictions. Alert, nervous, apprehensive, rigid, trembling patients who suffer acutely in mind or body, at the same time made worse by drinking Coffee. The Superficial and erratic character of its symptoms is most characteristic. Effects of grief and worry. Cannot bear tobacco. Pain is small, circumscribed spots ( Oxal-ac.) The plague. Hiccough and hysterical vomiting.
BETTER, while eating, change of position.
WORSE, in the morning, open air, after meals, Coffee, smoking, liquids, external warmth.

Wanted to first of all say thanks Gina for passing on all of this great information. I can see why Maggie's mom would be so proud of her sister :). I had a question for you - would you give this holistic medicine for nausea in place of the anti-nausea medication prescribed by the doctors (like Cerenia and Zofran) or would this be in addition to. I have used ginger as a supplement in addition to the Zofran and Cerenia that I've given Mackenzie (in my previous posts I called Zofran - Ondansetron which I found out is the generic for Zofran). So I'm trying to get up to speed on all of this and understand this better. Mackenzie just had her 5th chemo treatment and there were a couple of days that were a little rough for her. But now she's doing much better - almost back to normal.

I'm also wondering if anyone has been prescribed Zofran too as I've noticed that Cerenia seems to be the anti-nausea med for tripawds on this website. Although my vet has prescribed both.

Gina, you mention Ignatia Amara - sounds like something many of us could have used when going through this tripawd process. Thanks for the tip! sf-smile

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

Thank you Kami for the nice words! :-D

Homeopathic medicine is mostly given based on the symptoms showing. So, unless you are under a program monitored by a Doctor, like Dr. Loops, I would never recommend just giving homeopathic medicine for good measure, per se.

Example: If nausea is presented (with or without the use of other medications such as Cerenia) I would try Nux Vomica first, since that is a fantastic remedy for toxic exposure from drugs.

If nausea and diarrhea are present, my first choice would be Arsenicum Album. But if one didn't work, I would be inclined to try the other after 3 doses. I always reach for a 30C potency and give it three times per day. If no results in 24 hours, I would try something different, paying special attention to any new symptoms that pop up.

If the pet is fine with no symptoms, I would give no acute remedy.

So, in answer to your question, yes, you can give homeopathics and the regular medication at the same time. I would be striving for not using the conventional medication at all, if possible, since the homeopathics doesn't have to be processed thru the liver or kidneys or what have you…so it's easier on the body.

The main thing I look for when giving homeopathic is a change in attitude. Sometimes you will see a twinkle in the eye or a spring in the step but the nausea may still be hanging on. That is OK because if you can help the mental condition, that is often a better improvement than just addressing the nausea itself.

Complex subject (homeopathics) but the more you read about it, the more you will love it I hope! smiley14

Thanks so much Gina! This is so helpful - I really appreciate your knowledge and expertise on this. The change in attitude definitely would make a big difference for us parents coping with this side effect. It's so difficult to see your pet suffering in any way. And after the surgery and then putting them thru chemo, it just becomes a bit overwhelming. Thanks again!! Your pawesome!!sf-smile

Yes, thank you very much, Gina! Reading your posts has been so helpful. I appreciate all the information you have posted. And now I may finally make the call to the integrative medicine vet the oncologist recommended I talk to about supplements for Holly.
🙂
Thanks,

Hi Holly's Mom,
Just curious about the integrative medicine vet - is this similar to a homeopathy vet? And is this vet affliated with your oncologist? I would like to see if there are any vets in my area (LA) that specialize in this and maybe I just need to contact my current vet about this (but it's never been brought up.) I'm still trying to get up to speed on all of this as I know that it would make a difference in the quality of life for Mackenzie. Thanks! Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)

Just a tidbit(to Cami mostly as you are asking about homepaths)...it's not critical that your dog be actually physically seen by a homeopath.  Most consults are actually done over the phone.  Maggie's homeopath is Dr. Charles Loops in NC.  I live in Maine.  Dr. Loops is highly known for treating dogs with cancer.

Thanks so much Jerry! Definitely helpful! And thanks Tracy - that's great to know that most of these consults are done on the phone. After I sent my post on finding a doctor in my area, I did read about Dr. Loops (which has been mentioned here many times) and he does consultation on the phone. I think I'm going to try this out since he comes highly recommended. Thanks! Kami (Mackenzie's Mom)

Good for you Kami!

FWIW, here's a short list of patients of Dr. Loops that I know is or has used him:

Maggie :-)   for soft tissue sarcoma

Eisen for bone cancer I believe (a member of Tripawds I believe)

Dilly for MCT – my sister's pitbull – still here 9 years later after diagnosis

Addie for bone cancer – my sister's friend's mix – still here after being diagnosed I believe TWELVE years ago and treated by Dr. Loops as well.

I attended the same seminar by him with my sister years ago.  He's an amazing, compassionate man.
