It's been a couple weeks since my last post, and Titus appetite has been better but most days he would eat heartily on his own for a few mouthfuls, then lay down and look less interested. Handfeeding gets him back on his feet for a few more on his own, and the whole cycle repeats. Does anyone think the mets can somehow cause nausea or obstruct his oesophagus or stomach?

He had been licking a sore spot (like a newly formed bunion in our case) on the inside of his remaining right hind paw two saturdays ago, and woke up on Monday with the paw and ankle swollen to twice the original size.

The vet cut the swollen bunion spot open to drain the pus and bloody fluids. Antibiotics (Baytril) were precribed and I was giving a syringe and solution to flush and bandage the incision at least twice a day. Titus doesn't seem to be in pain at all, but since it is a major contact point to the ground when he lays down and pushes to get up on, it must be uncomfortable with that big of a sore.

We are on our 10th day of treatment and the swell is gone, however traces of pus and having the granular tissue heal from inside out seems much slower than when his incision site got infected a week after his amputation.

I've started him back on K9 immunity these past couple days, and am sad to see his behavioural change these past few weeks since his stopmach upset and food rejection episode. He's now less eager to go for walks, up the stairs, and really picky with the food.

On the lighter note, Titus passed his 21st month ampuversary on the 4th and rewarded a muffin with pumpkin mash, and 2 balloons he went berserk for (yes he loves popping them)!

Hugs to all of you from us,

Carol and Titus

Hi Carol,

First- HAPPY AMPUVERSARY!  21 months is awesome.

Have you had blood work done recently?  My pug Maggie lost her appetite and it turned out she had kidney issues.  She would eat sometimes on her own, but not others.  I would offer her chicken which she would refuse, then immediately offer turkey which she would eat.  I was able to manage her kidney issues fairly easily, but getting her to eat was always difficult.  I often fed her with a syringe.

There are many meds you can try to decrease nausea or stomach pain, and increase appetite.  I can't remember from your earlier post if you had tried them.  Maggie at various times was on Pepcid, Prylosec, Carofate.  You could check with your vet.

I hate to hear Titus is having some recent problems, but OMG 21 months - that is just awesome!  You must be doing a lot of things that are keeping him on track.

Hope the sore heals quickly and he is eating normally in no time.  Can't the antibiotics cause some nausea?  Looking forward to the next update.  You guys rock!

21 months, wow, wow, wow.  What a lucky boy Titus is to have you!

Raven was on metoclopramide, sucrulfate, and pepcid to manage nausea.  You may want to ask your vet about those.  Antibiotics can whack their system too, I always had Raven on a probiotic supplement, yogurt if nothing else, to help replenish the good bacteria in the gut and keep his stools firm.  He was on Baytril for life due to liver mets that would get infected.  So, he was on all these meds and did well with them.

Give Titus a big hug and I sure hope he gets healed and feeling better soon!

21 months is definitely cause for rejoicing!

I haven't had nausea issues with Shelby but did with one of my other cancer dogs, Opie.  Reglan seemed to help which was, of course, prescribed by his oncologist.  And his holistic vet had some little tea pills for nausea that tasted like licorice....I know that doesn't help much but perhaps someone else could weigh in?

Regardless, lots of prayers and healing energy coming your way from Shelby & me.

WOWSA indeed!   21 months!

I'm with Shanna, antibiotics and supplements can cause tummy issues.  When Comet was on Clavomox (antibiotic) she'd get sick and didn't want to move either because the hopping churns the tummy.  She'd actually take a hop and spit up without even seeing it coming.  Comet takes cipro antibiotic everyday for a neck disc infection and will for the rest of her life.  It's very mild  on the stomach.  (and a good general antibiotic)  I took one of hers on an empty stomach once to see and I'm sensitive to stuff on an empty stomach and it didn't bother me.

Hope it gets better!  And congrats to Titus!

Everyday has been an uphill challenge since 3 weeks ago, or should i say maybe since the lung mets were discovered (march but it was more stable then).

Today has been emotional as Titus decided he doesn't want to do the stairs anymore or go for walks. His appetite was picking up since his tummy and foot problems, ate by himself the past few days, but today he was a lot slower and didnt want to stand up to go pee outside. He had a huge bloated tummy and threw up once. I gave him Mylanta and then a Macrolon later on. He hasn't thrown up since, and been drinking lots of water and passing gas. Guess that's a good sign for this problem.

Treats used to work to get him past the door outside but he isn't falling for that anymore. Since my bedroom is on the 3rd floor, he hesitated big time to tackle those stairs tonight.

Since his amputation he had no problems charging up and down because he loves to follows me around the house. Today seemed like reality check that his hind leg is giving him problems (apart from the abscess 2 weeks ago and slowly healing now). Attempted to take him for a car ride round the neighborhood but he missed a step and struggled to get his behind up into the car. He backed out immediately and looked fearful to try again. I tried to help him but he refused to get in, ran back into the house and laid down without relieving himself for the night.

Can I say it's sad that car rides are his absolute favorite activities? I'll need to work on helping him get on it easier, and do work on carrying all 80+ lbs of him into the car.

I contemplated having him sleep downstairs from now on, but he saw me when i went back down and stood up. We took a long time before he felt ready, and he did well pretty much the whole way, stopped for 5 mins on the 2nd level, til the last three steps he gave way and I held on to him for a minute to rest, and carried his behind while he worked with his front legs to get upstairs.

I balled my eyes out thinking about the whole traumatising ordeal for him, and whether this will be the last night he's going to spend with me in my room.

The vet is out of town til the 19th, and we will meet with someone else on Tuesday to get a CBC and new scans done to check kidney and liver functions mainly, as well as the situation with his arthritis.

Things have been good and bad and 21 months have been great, but knowing so is also bittersweet after the mets. Am trying my best to stay positive for the boy, and oh btw before the stairs, he mustered up enough energy and confidence after i gave him another balloon to chase and pop. wink What a good boy he has been.

Thank you for the advice and very encouraging words, he's completed the course of antibiotics since wednesday, so I keep my fingers crossed that the nausea/upset stomach goes away for good.

Will keep you guys posted and I apologise for this very long post (i think u can sense my emotional rollercoaster here).

Hugs from us both and well wishes to you and your tripawds.

Oh Carol, can I feel your pain right now after having the evening I had with Trouble last night.  We have to just be thankful for the time we've been given (Trouble is going on 20 months) - it is so very hard when they begin to weaken.  Thankfully we don't have any stairs to deal with, but the car is a big issue.  Since Troubs lost some weight, it is much easier for us - the Ruffwear harness has been a Dog-send.  I'm able to lift her with the harness and keep from hurting either of us.

Lots of doggie prayers coming for you and Titus.
