Oh no Sue! I am so sorry Nova is struggling. I always point new members to the Queen's story as one of hope when they first start down the amputation and cancer path- in fact I just did it today.
I really hope that there is something you can do for Nova.

I am so, so sorry. Nova is an inspiration to so many of us and we send positive thoughts your way.

Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011
Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.

We loved him even more.
Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.

Sue,

Like so many others have said, Queen Nova is the most amazing dog.  I truly hope this is just another blip on the screen and she continues to soar and inspire for a long time to come.

I think Charon and some others have hit on something about possible dementia.  My girl Shy went through that and did pretty well for awhile on meds.  I bought them over the counter and can't remember what they are called right now.  It is probably somewhere in my blog.

You and Nova will be in my thoughts and prayers today.  I will be hoping for good news for you both!

I couldn't begin to say how special Sammy is to us.  Living and laughing with and loving this wonderful boy is priceless.

Thank you all so much for your outpouring of support for Queen Nova.  You don't know how much the support from this wonderful community means to me.  Looking back at my title of this post, I am not sure it is entirely accurate.  I am told it is probably more likely that the brain tumor (if that's what it is) is a new primary, and not related to her osteosarcoma.  Her lungs were totally clear, as they have been for 3.5 years, and knowing that is the most common place for mets, I thought we were in the clear.  But cancer has a way of sucker punching you when you least expect it.

Ellen, thank you for the information about CCD, I have read a lot about it.  I did talk to my vet about putting her on the medication, so we might do that.  Trouble is, Nova is exhibiting so many of the symptoms of a brain tumor it is almost "textbook".  And the fact that it seems to have come on suddenly, with extreme weight loss, makes it all the more likely it's cancer.

As I said before, I feel so blessed that Nova has beaten the odds so many times over.  I know the time will come when we will have to say goodbye, these angels are on earth with us for way too short a time....

We love you Nova!

You know, that just really sums it up.  Even those of us who have not met you in person love you from the bottom of our hearts.

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Hi Sue,

Nova is what helped me through all of my struggles with Valentina. When I first joined this group I read her story and it helped me so much! I knew if Nova could go through all she did and still come out shining then there was hope for my Valentina too. And even though Valentina didn't have as much time as I had hoped I am still grateful every day for the time that I did have with her. Nova's story made me realize to enjoy every moment to it's fullest. You have been such a great Mom to Nova and She loves you for that. I am sad with you too. No time is never enough. Still hoping that somehow she improves and can get past this. I know you will shower her with love either way. Praying for you both. (((Hugs))) to you and Sweet Queen Nova Tripawds Queen!

Dearest Sue, The Queen, and all the family,
Once more, I find that mere words cannot express just how sorry we are to hear of this development. Your entire pack has been the source of enormous strength and inspiration to the TriPawd community. Your 3½ year journey is an inspiration to any and all who are walking down this path. The love that we have for you is endless as are our prayers at this time.

We were reminded of our journey less than two weeks ago when we had to make a visit to the specialist facility where Cherry had her amputation and chemotherapy regiment. They recognized me immediately. While we were there to see a different internal medicine specialist, Cherry’s oncologist and the lead technician made a special point of coming out while I sat in the waiting area, to talk to me and reminisce about the great success that Cherry had. She is one (of many) of their “poster children” on what faith, positive thoughts, and determination can accomplish. Queen Nova is a “poster child” for the entire TriPawd community.

The Queen has been through a great deal, torsion, blindness, and osteosarcoma. Sue, you should take comfort in the fact that the Queen feels so much love that she has battled each and every with her lone goal of being with you even longer. The love that you share knows no bounds of time or distance. Comfort her again, as you have done so very well during each and every one of her battles. Know that the prayers of this entire community is behind you and all send our love and positive thoughts. Also, know as we all express our support for you, that we feel so inadequate in choosing our words for you and the Queen mean so very much to us.

We Love You All.

I saw your postings on Facebook and thought I'd write a bit more over here...  I am so sad to hear that Nova's condition is not good.  Her consistent forward momentum despite her health issues has been such an inspiration to Tripawds everywhere.  It's sad to think that her time may be coming, but you can console yourself with the many happy years you've had with her -- even post-cancer.  Her will is strong, and she will give you the strength you need to face whatever comes.  We are sending you a big hug and hope that this is just a bump in the road.

Long live the Queen!

Sue,

What are her exact symptoms?  Is she circling or falling to one side?  Seizures?  Are her pupils a different size?  I know that an MRI is the only way to truly diagnose a brain tumor but most dogs have specific symptoms.  If a brain tumor is truly suspected then many dogs will make at least some response to prednisone rather than an NSAID.

It might be worthwhile to look into atypical Addison's disease.  This is somewhat common in Danes and affected dogs primarily have weakness and weight loss.  A routine blood sample will not diagnose it; your vet will have to run cortisol levels.

I also couldn't believe it when I saw this on Facebook. I think we are all so used to the Queen being her happy smiling, cancer-butt-kicking self that this is hard news for all of us to hear.

Sending out our best pawsitive thoughts for the Queen and hoping to see her happy smiling face around here and on Facebook for a loooong time to come.

Hang in there,

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
