Hi everyone,

I just ordered all of Hunter's supplements yesterday.  We are following a protocol suggested by our new Holistic vet.

He is continuing with IV chemotherapy (Carboplatin) as long as he tolerates it, and he has 2 treatments left, but we want to build up his immune system so he can fight this thing with the best of his ability!

What I'm wondering is....when the supplements arrive can I start them all right away?  Or should we introduce one at a time and space them apart a bit?  What has worked for everyone here?

Right now Hunter is taking Milk Thistle and a mixed Chinese immune system booster.  We are switching from that this weekend to a better Chinese mixed herb that includes Milk Thistle.  This is so his liver can handle the chemotherapy and we'll discontinue it after his treatments.

We are also going to switch from Acana Pacifica dry kibble and go back to Orijen 6 Fish dry kibble.  He's had that before and we now realize that we need to keep the carbohydrate content down to a minimum if we don't go with a raw diet. Our other lab is getting switched to that food as well.  As the "monkey buts" need to stay strong too!

The supplements we are adding are:  K9 Immunity (2, 2Xday) and K9 Transfer Factor (1 per day), Krill Oi (1000 mg.  per day), Complete Probiotics for Pets (1 1/2 scoops per day), and Artemisinin (100 mg. 2Xday).

Our new holistic vet also recommended a diffuser and the use of Sacred Frankincense oil. He will inhale it to stop any cancer cells that may be trying to metastasize in his lungs. She truly believes in the benefit of this oil.

I will await your suggestions and advice.....

Our Super Dog Hunter crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on a beautiful summer day in July, just 3 days shy of his 10th Birthday. He gave us everything since he was 8 weeks old.  Hunter was a 14 month warrior of OS.  We LOVE and MISS him every day.

Hi there...Good for you for being so gung-ho on this. Cadence is on a slew of supplements too. When we first started, the vet told us how to space them apart until she was taking all of them everyday. As far as the K9 Immunity stuff goes, I would leave that out until after chemo so the chemo can do its job. Some schools of study say you should not give things like Apocaps or K9 Immunity until after chemo due to the antioxidant nature. Antioxidants can actually help cells, and right now you are trying to kill the bad cancer cells.

Here is a video that admin posted on this topic: "Consider watching our video interview with Dr. Mona Rosenberg for her recommendations about not using immunity supplements during chemotherapy."

Hope this helps!

I talked to our onc about doing antioxidants during chemo as well (haven't watched what Dr. Mona says, but my onc, Dr. V works in the same practice...). Anyway, he said that the studies weren't conclusive either way, and that some schools of thought said you should do the antiox's during chemo/some said definitely not. It was his belief though that the don't do any harm during chemo - and he said he would never let me give Abby something that he thought was undoing the work he was trying to do with her, so he gave me the OK to keep giving them to her. (Don't know if that contradicts what Dr. Mona says...)

As for the arte - you're giving it 2x/day? I know some folks do that - but it can be tricky because of having to give it 3 to 4 hours away from any meals with iron. Most folks just give it at night. (Did you see the post I did here about arte?) Maybe you did and you are fully away of the need to keep it away from iron-rich meals/treats, but just wanted to make sure.

All the best to your handsome boy!

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Thank you for your replies so far...

Our oncologist says she has a ton of patients on K9 Immunity and so I didn't give it a second thought about putting Hunter on that now.  But I will confirm that it's OK with the holistic vet before we start it.  As for the Artemisinin ... I did read your blog on it, and thanks for the reminder.  I'll give it to him at our "last call" of the evening... what I call our 10:30 pm potty break before bed.

Hey everyone....

Just called the Orijen dog food company.

The dog food we are switching Hunter too is Orijen 6 Fish.  It has a max of 25% carbohydrates.

Our holisitc vet isn't happy with even 20% carbs and is really pushing for us to put Hunter onto a raw diet.

She mentioned that Nature's Variety is the most affordable... in the 5 lb. chubs; chicken variety.

Anyone have their tripawd on this raw diet at all?

Any coupons out there?  Any frequent buyer program?

I'm sure you all know how we have to pinch pennies to do the best for our pups.

See if your vet has an opinion about Wysong Epigen, a completely starch free high protein premium kibble, or check out Jerry's  list of recommended grain free dog foods for other suggestions.

Hi there Hunter's mom. We do have both of our dogs on a raw diet. We had the puppy on Nature's Variety Beef which he really loved and did great on. And we had Cadence on Stella and Chewy's which she did great on. Because of the cost of buying separate foods and because these foods don't really offer a discount, we switched both of them to Darwin's Pet http://www.darw.....nspet.com/ which is also a pre-prepared raw diet and ships in from Washington state. After doing the math, we found out this was the cheapest option. You get a discount ordering in bulk. We order 50 pounds at a time for these guys. You save 10% on orders over 50 lbs per shipment and 15% on orders over 100 lbs per month. Another advantage is that I am not running to the store all the time to get the individual bags of food. It just comes right to my door on a set schedule. Hope this help!

Interesting how the different onco's have such different opinions. The two I consulted with were opposed to any supplements during chemo and said to start arte upon the conclusion of chemo. So confusing for us pawrents when the docs don't have definitive answers. I realize that is because the science isn't clear yet. So it is with this diagnosis...

And definitely start slowly with the supplements so that if you have a problem you will be able to tell which supplement it is. I tried starting Duke on the K9 Immunity Plus and I think it was causing him to not feel well. And I started at only 1 a day, not the 3 recommended. He does have a sensitive tummy so that's part of the issue. I backed off and may try to reintroduce depending upon the recommendation of the 3rd onco that we are seeing today (Dr. Mona - the one Jackie, aka Angel Abby's Mom, referred to above).

There was another thread recently where all the supplements had to be stopped due to stomach problems and they are going to be reintroduced slowly to see which one may have been responsible. In all good science you want to introduce one variable at a time so you can see which one has what effect. Go slowly...

And best of luck. Hunter is a handsome guy and I wish the two of you lots more time together!
