Hi All. I am new here and I found this hoping to get some suggestions. I have a 10 year old mix breed do who had an amputation yesterday of his right rear leg due to hemangiopericytoma. He is doing well except he has not urinated since last night. He is very tired and on a lot of drug which I think is most of if (and he is having a hard time feeling stable) but I could really use some suggestion to help him out if anyone has any. I am in constant contact with my vet as well.

Thanks in advance!

Ali

Some people wait days for the dogs to do their doody after surgery. Pain meds are usually the cause. As Jerry's vet told us, when they need to go, they'll go. But we are not vets, please consult yours with any serious concerns.

What medication is your dog on? And what's his name?

Pain meds can cause urinary retention in some dogs (and people). Your vet may need to place a catheter in the bladder to drain it until his bladder function gets back on track (usually within a day or 2). But not urinating for more than 24 hrs is serious so please keep in close contact with your vet to see what they advise.

Right hind limb amputated 7/3/12 for OSA, started on alternating cycles of Carboplatin and Doxorubicin and oral Palladia. Single lung met 9/1. Met in the neck muscle removed 9/30. Large mass in sublumbar lymph node 10/2. Rescue chemo with ifosfamide 10/6. Mets to the rib and axillary lymph node 10/21. Started Leukeran and Pred 10/25. Wookie left this Earth for a far better place on 12/4/12. I miss you, Boo, you were my heart.

The first part of recovery ispretty tough but...PROMISE...it does get better! You're exactly right, he's doped up, just out of major surgeey and will definitely have a little balance issue initially.

Just kow that all this is normal. Yeah, as Wookie said, you'll want the "pee" thing to happen, but it make take days for the first poop. ?t is kow when that hapens......we celebrate anything arlund here!

You hang tough and know that we are right here withmyou! You are not alone, okay?

Check back withus when you can and let us know how things are going. You may not get much slee flr a few days!

Take care, stay positive and cheer him on for any ittle thing!

Hi all. Thanks for the support. He actually peed for shortly after I posted this and has not had an issue since. We pulled a few tricks out of the bag and I am not sure which one did the trick but either way it worked.

Moose, the dog who had the amputation, is an interesting dog. Basically no one can handle him expect for me and there are a few thing even I can not do without muzzling him. He came to me from a cruelty case 10 years ago. So far things have gone mostly smoothly with his recover but do to his special handling concerns it has been stressful.

Thank you all for the support and I am excited to read through everything to help my Moo.

Hi there,

Congratulations on the progress! We had to carry our dog up to the corner of the street to get her to "go", the whole neighbourhood got used to seeing me with a bundle of blankets and towels with various leads and slings dangling down, and sticking out of the top of the bundle was Dotty's head, sniffing the breeze and peering about regally. Whatever it takes, you'll do it!

Good luck for the rest of Moose's recovery, paws crossed for plain sailing.

He pooped this morning which was very exciting! Here is a photo of Moose from Saturday post-opervatively. He has great ears which you can't appreciate due to the cone :(

Ohhh Moose, what a face!  I'm so glad you pooped. Let's all do the potty dance!!!

We can't wait to see those ears of yours once you are free of the cone. Rest up buddy.

Yea for poop!

Moose- that is one gi-normus cone! No wonder you don't feel stable, one little breeze could knock you off your feet smiley.

Sounds like he is making progress, I hope his recovery goes smoothly.

Sorry for the really long delay in posting. We had a lot of complication, 5 surgeries over 5 weeks.

The good news is that he is 100% and acting like nothing ever happened. He runs, plays, chases frisbees, and seem more comfortable and happier! It was a rough go, but ultimately it was worth it!

Wow...five surgeries in a week would be tough...but especially for a pup who needs "special handling" because of past abuse.

Congrats that Moose is doing so well...he certainly is a very cute guy.
