Hey everyone, So I just found out my baby girl Bailey will need to start chemo on Monday next week. I was wondering reading the posts on here, I have heard about k9 immu ity and transfer factor but what is metronomics ? I wanted to see if anyone could reccommend or let me know how it worked using products like omega and k9 immunity if it made a difference? Did you have trouble getting your pups to take those pills? Any advice for new comers to chemo would be greatly appreciated. She just had her amputation about a week and a half ago and is doing very well...yay for tripawds 🙂

Hugs,

Bailey and Mom

Chemo was no problem for Jack, but some dogs (ie: Cherry) have had a ruff time of it.  I think metronomics is mainly used to slow down the progression of mets and is normally started once chemo stops (please correct me if I'm wrong).  K9 Immunity should be perfectly safe to use while on chemotherapy, just be sure to let your oncologist know before you start Bailey on it.  Although we can't prove it, I feel that Jack being on immunity helped keep his blood counts perfect (after 3 sessions, we have never had a problem with the CBC).  I used to give Jack his pills with an all-natural peanut butter (only ingredients were peanuts and oil), but he started licking off the tasty bits then spit out the pill.  I switched to butter (a trick I read about on this site) a couple days ago, and his pills are GONE in about 10 seconds.  That darn dog just loves butter...who knew?!?

Hi Bailey and Mom

The way my oncologist explained it to me is that "traditional" chemo is used to kill individual microscopic cancer cells. Metronomics is done to reduce the blood supply to lesions that may develop or are already developing. If such a lesion exists, traditional chemo cannot penetrate it to kill the cancer cells. As Jackers said, metronomics tends to begin once chemo ends. However, some of us use a few supplements that are part of a metronomics regime, e.g. NSAID's like metacam, to reduce the blood supply during chemo.

My dog is on regular chemo now. I expect to begin metronomics once this ends, regardless of whether mets have appeared at that point (unless he ends up on some other treatment that conflicts with metronomics ).

Lots of us use supplements like fish oil and K9 immunity , but I can't say how they work with chemo or metronomics . Should be fine from what I have heard

Hi Bailey and Mom,

We know how there are sooo many questions to answer when you start to embark on this cancer journey. To answer a few of your questions, here are some links we hope might help:

Here's the link to our blog post about My Metronomic Therapy, and one to a video follow up with Dr. Mullins

And a second blog post, “Options for Treating Osteosarcoma after Lung Metastasis”

Dr. Demian Dressler has a good sumary of Metronomics in his Dog Cancer Blog (fantastic resource). Bone Cancer Dogs also has a good section about Metronomics.

I was on K9 Immunity , and my pawrents feel that it added to my longevity after lung mets were discovered. Here is a link about the results of the K9 Immunity Clinical Trial that I participated in

Digging through all of the options and supplements can be so overwhelming. We opted to just focus on a select few of what seemed the most promising, affordable and realistic for our lifestyle, based on the information we had available at the time.

Good luck to you. Let us know what you decide to do.

Bailey and Mom,

Chemotherapy – Yech!!!  Dad said that he could actually taste the chemicals when he kissed me good-night.  Actually as I read the postings, I realize that while many have had an easier time with the chemotherapy just as many have had a far worse time.  They tell me that they started the treatments just hours after the surgery, but I was asleep and cannot confirm this fact.  Dad made sure that I had plenty of nutrition with Ensure, Soy Milk, and a paste that he stuffed.  As long as he made it past the tip of my tongue, I did not spit it out.  My blood count did not drop during the entire duration of the chemotherapy and my appetite did gradually return after all the chemicals were gone.  I still keep Dad guessing on what I want to eat.

My main recommendation with chemotherapy is just to be patient with each other.  This will be a stressful time for each of you, but the processes will net great returns.  I am loving my life and I still make Dad take me on our truck trips.  Now if only I could get him to go back to Yellowstone this Fall.

Paws Crossed and nothing but Pawsitive Thoughts to you both.

Cherry

Just FYI, Dr. Dressler did a great post yesterday about Chemo Side Effects. Thought you might find it useful as you do your research.
