My dog Roscoe had his leg amputated last October 2015 due to a Soft Tissue Sarcoma, grade 2, and we are very sad to find out that it has returned in two locations (Shoulder and near his rib cage on the opposite side of the original tumor...which I am told is rare). Tripawds Forum was SO helpful last time so I figured I would post on here and see if anyone has any experience with this? Both tumors are grade 2 and we have a surgical consultation this week to do a chest x ray and schedule his surgery.

My main question is: Has anyone had soft tissue sarcoma recurrence, had it removed again, and then it went away? I am trying to see a light at the end of the tunnel with this. Is it just going to come back over and over? Ugh. Any advice would be greatly appreciated?

Secondly, if you do have experience with recurrence, did you have any luck with chemo meds post-surgery? With the location of his, radiation isn't really an issue (would affect his lungs), and he's so young that the chances are high radiation would give him another tumor in a few years...

Thanks in advance Tripawd members!!

Much love,

Kristin & Roscoeheart

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this! Unfortunately, I don't know anything about this kind of cancer. Our Harmony had MCT. Someone will be chiming in any time.

Peace be with you and your sweet Roscoe.

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

Hi Kristin and Roscoe,

I am so sorry to hear about the recurrence of the sarcoma. I have a wonderful Golden Mix named Charlie who had his left front leg amputated in December of 2015 for high grade histiocytic sarcoma. He had 6 rounds of oral chemo (lomustine) and was doing great until his last oncology check up where they found a small lump on his right front leg. He had the surgery 2 weeks ago and unfortunately the sarcoma has returned.  The oncologist was very surprised that it returned on another limb since it typically spreads to internal organs like the lung and liver. He is doing so well otherwise ---happy, playful, loving food--that we decided to give him a second chance at chemo. He had his first treatment today. He started on vinorelbine which has seen some success, even though the study numbers are small. He will get 8 treatments all together if all goes well. The first four treatments are weekly then the next four treatments are spaced every 2 weeks. We are just going to follow his lead and see where this journey will take us. He is such an inspiration to so many and has more friends visiting him (human and canine). His quality of life is excellent.

Good luck with Roscoe. Sending sweet, golden hugs to him from Charlie.

Hi Julie ~

Would love to hear more about Charlie!  Our Murphy is also a retriever-mix and also had histiocytic sarcoma!  He had his right front leg removed 4/4/13, then 6 doses of CCNU.  They thought there was metastasis to his left shoulder blade, but that spot has not grown since it was first found in the fall 2013.  He continues to do really well over 3 years later.

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17
