Ok, so Molly J started taking prednisone (10 mg, 2x/day) after a seizure this past Sunday. Side effects did not present until today: very thirsty, hungrier, difficulty  holding urine, panting a bit, vomiting. Gave her pepcid as prescribed as well. Any advice, other than perhaps decreasing the dosage?

Not a vet disclaimer...done! AND...every dog IS different!

They all sou d like some side effects from pred. though. Not sure about the vomiting though. I know it can be hard on the tummy and MUST be goven with food.

A girl her size, that doseage is not an overly huge amount (in my very unprofessional opinion) However, perhaps your vet will suggest a reduction to see if any of the symptons subside....perhaps 10 mg. once a day.

Sending you the veey best wishes for lots more snuggles and tummy rubs!

Just wanted to add, if the panting just comes and goes and if you can get rid of the vomiting, the "symptons" of eating well, drinking "well" and peeing a bit more, all keep the seizures away, that's not too bad of a trade off!

I'm sure Molly J enjoys the extra eating most of all!

Add some trembling to that list.

Sally, I was just saying that these side effects are certainly better than the alternative, as I switched the rugs from the washer to the dryer. And she is definitely enjoying a bit more to eat. My clean, pink shirt is now pink and black. She has always been a snuggler, and we are getting in as much of that as possible. I just want my girl to be comfy and happy.

Great minds.......heah, sure beats the alternstive!

Will be jnterested to see what others have to sayabout these side effects snd suggestions. Hmmmmm...just wondering if something is causing her an "owwee" and the panting and the trembling are related to that, more so than the prednisone? Have you massaged up snd down to see if she reacts to any lressure points? Perhaps you could try a dose of Tramadol, with a vet's go ahead.

I KNOW she is comfy and happy because she is getting more loving and spoiling than most dogs get in a lifetime!

Keep on keeping on Sweet Molly! You are doing great...and so is mom!!

I just called the emergency vet office where she was seen on Sunday, to ask about the trembling, since I hadn't seen it listed as a typical side effect. They're also the only ones up this late who wouldn't mind me calling. Lol. I also asked if I should decrease her dosage. The tech I spoke with told me that we should try to continue with this dosage, as it is a small amount. I have checked her for any signs of something hurting her, but she seems ok. She just appeared to be hyped up for a few minutes. Now, she's all snuggled in again. I'm so glad a weekend is approaching. There shall be whatever Molly wants and wine for me. way-confused

Just want to add that my Polly had all the same symptoms with pred that you are describing, these are mostly very common side effects.....the shaking is not what I experienced with Polly, though, this could be just how pred affects Molly J, and the 20 mg a day is a minimal amount, but can still produce all these side effects. My Polly had a life threatening illness earlier in her life that necessitated her taking 80 mgs a day, that was a nightmare for us.

You are doing great with Molly, so hang in there, and give the pred a bit of adjustment, like Sally says, make sure she takes the pred with food, and you can definitely give her pepcid for her belly.

Love,
Bonnie, Angel Polly, and new crew

Good, Imw glad things settled down and you got confirmation that the dose really is NOT a large dose at all.. As Bonnie said, it doesn't mean that Molly isn't having side effects as every dog is different. Sounds more like "jist a moment of something" that has now dissipated. Is this journey crazy or what?!

ENJOY YOUR WEEK END!!!!

Hugs to all!

There is another medicine you can give also. TY was on it. Something like Sucralate ??? Not sure the name is right. It is a stomach coating med. Makes the med schedule a bit wild because it needs to be given 2 hours before food and meds and then the Pepcid 1 hour before. That was when I made up the little med bags so I could keep track. Prednisone can cause restlessness in humans so maybe the panting  and trembling is How this is showing up in Molly. The other side effect he had was his head got skinny. Improved his appetite a lot. He was on 20 am and 20 pm. Hang in there, Lori, Ty & the gang

Thanks for the additional info, links, and encouragement. No more tummy upset since the other day. I'm thankful for your support and for washable rugs. ;)
