Back at vets yesterday. Still not eating, very lethargic. Not at all normal:( his fever was 104. I bought a thermometer and will now keep track of temp. We have had these same symptoms twice before. Once was before amp and one before 1st chemo. Antibiotics, and sucralate. Bloodwork looked good a bit low on red count, but liver, kidney sect. All good . White count good also. He still ate very little today. He has lost 10 pounds. Not sure how much his leg and shoulder weighed, but he is definitely thinner. So frustrating. My husband says no more chemo. If he has not improved in a few days, I am afraid I am going to have to let him go. This is not at all how I thought it would be. He is a fighter, I really thought he could fight this. I am still wondering if there is an other underlying issue that is causing fever, lack of appetite and his back end always eels stiff when this happens. Any advice to get some food into him would be appreciated. Today I tricked him into eating chicken Livers by handing them out as treats to him and my other 2 dogs. He just turns his head away form most anything ,including home cooking.he has tested negative for Lyme and related things, as that would seem the most likely scenario.

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Your baby is the cutest ever, I just want to cuddle up next to him and make it all better.  I have a thing for labs too!

I wish I had a lot of great advice to give you but I'm not as experienced dealing with this stuff as some others on this sight.  I know they'll chime in eventually but in the meantime I didn't want you to feel alone.  It's late and I know how much more terrifying things seem at night.  So, I just want you to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!  Everyone here cares a lot about your pup and you!!

I can relate to your frustrations and I'm sure most people on this site would say the same for them.  Even though my pup, a 9 year old yellow lab named Jersey Girl, was limping badly before her amputation surgery she was also happy, playful and full of energy.  You'd never know she was a dog with bone cancer!   So, I thought she would bounce back from the surgery fairly fast, but she didn't and it really scared me.  She was in the hospital for 4 days because she was exceptionally weak, would barely eat and wouldn't even stand up for the vet much less walk.  She was on Deramaxx for 3 months before the osteosarcoma diagnosis (to treat what the vet said was "dysplasia pain" - NOT!) and it turns out that drug prevented her blood from clotting properly after the amputation.  She "oozed blood" from the surgery site for over a week. It took nearly 2 weeks but she eventually got that crap out of her system and got strong again.  Every dog is different so it's always hard to know what's going on but Ty has been through a lot and taken a few different meds. Maybe one of them, the combination or even the sequence is making him feel crappy.

I also noticed that my Jersey Girl would have a really good day followed by 2 or even 3 not so good days and that pattern happened kind of regularly.  It was always disappointing to see the down days but I figured it was part of the healing process.  She would feel good and overdo it then pay for it afterwards.

In the weeks following her surgery her appetite was also on and off like Ty's.   I almost always had to bring her food to her because she wasn't interested enough to get up and go get it.  Our vet tech gave me a tip that saved us in those weeks. Try sticking Ty's food in his jowl, that area between his teeth and skin, as far back as you can.  This worked brilliantly for us.  It seemed to remind my pup that she liked the taste of food.  Most of the time I only had to do that with a few pieces of food and then she'd finish eating on her own.  There were times though that I had to hand feed her the entire bowl of food.

Ty's fever is obviously the thing of biggest concern with him.  It's high, no doubt, and that of course means some sort of infection is present.  Have you had x-rays and or ultrasound done on his major organs?  If not you might want to consider those options to make sure nothing's off there.  I realize his bloodwork is clear but that doesn't show everything.  One thing I knew FOR SURE with my Jersey Girl is that she was never wrong with her cues.  EVER.  If something seemed amiss with her health or she was trying to get my attention for one reason or another, there was always always always a good reason for it.  Sometimes it would take me awhile to figure it out and that was frustrating but it was ALWAYS there. I suspect that's true for all dogs.  I guess what I'm saying is, I suggest you keep digging and trust your mama instinct because it's usually right.  If the time comes for Ty to cross the rainbow bridge, trust me you'll know it.  It will be crystal clear.

Thinking of you and Ty and sending hugs and positive energy.  Stay strong, you can do it!

Paw love,

Claudia and Angel Jersey Girl

Okay, take a deep breath...BREATHE....

Ditto everything Jersey Girl said so well......Ty is giving you a cue and, as frustrating as itis, hold on and kee diggng.

SECOND OPINIONS are huge arond here! I really suggest that strngly.

Tyis dealing with a combomof so many things...recovering fro major surgery, fever, possible reaction to drugs.

Clearly something causing a fever. And a fever can cause everythingyou've said...the lack of appetite...the lethargy. And, nfortnately, surgeries can smetimes brng alng infections that must be treated aggressivel and quickly. You can put the chemoon the back burner for now and eliminate that.

Have you had an orthopedic guy check him out or perhaps a Physical Therapist? The stiffness could be a clue, maybe. Does he seem in pain or just tired?

A few times we've seen an underlying stitch left in and that has caused pain and ndiagnosed nfection before it was figured out.

You saidhe displayed fever and not eatng before surgery? How lng before? What happened tht got him back on track?

I have to run to work now, but I'll check back later today.

Hang in here, o,ay? We'll figure this out!

Huge hugs to all! HUGE!

Love, Sally and Happy Hannah

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I'm so sorry. This is the part of the ride that forces us to take things day by day, sometimes hour by hour. Try not to think the worst yet. What exactly did your vet say when you took Ty in? What tests were run, what is the game plan for helping him feel better?

The thing about chemo is, not all dogs do great on it. Most do, but some don't, and if quality of life is suffering, then that's when you have to make that call to decide to stop treatments. There is nothing at all wrong with that, you gave it a good shot, if it comes to that. Most times once chemo is stopped the dog bounces right back.

You shouldn't be trying to guess what's wrong, your vet should be guiding you to help you figure it out. If you're not getting answers and he's not feeling better in an acceptable amount of time, that's when you get another opinion. Don't give up yet, I'm going to bet that it's not Ty giving up on life and he's just feeling lousy from the treatments.

Please keep us posted OK? lots of hugs coming your way.

Please don't let him go.  My great dane Bailey just started chemo and she did the exact same thing.  We quit giving her the anti-nausea meds.  She's on nothing but she also started chemo on the 27th and her surgery was on the 7th of February.  My husband cooks lean hamburger in a patty on the stove and she loves it.  Also cooked chicken in a pain with a little water and steak sauce and hand fed her...  put gateraide in his water, or pedialyte (I used the Walgreens or Wal Mart brand.)  You have come too far to let go, hold on.  Bailey has several posts on here and I'm on facebook. Tracy Reidel-Madigan.

HUGS PLEASE HANG IN THERE, IT'S NOT EASY I KNOW I WENT THE SAME ROUTE YOU ARE GOING.

Sending prayers your way!

Tracy and Bailey
