Let me just say, this is the most stressful thing I’ve been experiencing. I’m not sure what’s normal and what’s not and to be quite honest, I cant afford any more vet bills. Sorry, rant coming..... its been financially, emotionally, and physically exhausting. We’re literally at our limit with all three. I feel like breaking down and crying every 20 minutes. Neither of us are really sleeping. Anyway, I’ve been cleaning the drainage with a mixture of towels, gauze, paper towels, potty pads and a warm wet washcloth. Now, is the washcloth going to aggravate the sutures or healing process at all?

Is it normal for the drainage to drip and gushes more a little after she stands up or moves from laying on her incision? Should I try to stop her from laying on it??

How does it look to you guys?

Sending hugs.  We all know how hard this is.  Yes the seroma will leak heavier when they get up or move.  Our Max also wanted to lay on his amp side.  I figured it might help push the extra fluid out.  The thing with seroma 's is you want them to heal from the bottom to the top.  If they just scab over without that bottom healing going on they will just re-open.  Our surgeon added a broad spectrum antibiotic to his regime so you might want to ask yours about that.  It took about 3 weeks for Max's to completely close up.  In my opinion the incision looks good.  Just keep an eye on it.  If the discharge gets thick or smelly you want to address it for sure.  I wouldn't use a washcloth to clean it I'd stick with soft gauze and lightly pat dry.  Hang in there it will get better!

She takes her last antibiotic tomorrow, but she has a post op appointment on Monday to have the stitches looked at so hopefully they'll give her more then. I wish they'd let me trade in the $100 worth of Deramaxx I bought that her tummy can't handle sad

It hasnt been thick, just pink and watery. Sometimes a lot of discharge, sometimes a little, sometimes we can go a couple hours with none. The only smell is the faint smell of blood/pennies/copper so that's good too

I did cave and give Ziva a Tramadol last night around 4:30. She seemed to be in a little bit of discomfort, probably from me constantly cleaning her, so I let her have one.

In other news, I haven't been eating right and I can feel it! I made sure to cook some chicken and rice for the dogs, but haven't been cooking for myself. Oops.

Many dogs are kept on pain management well into their 3rd week out from surgery.  Make sure you take care of yourself too during this time.  It's very important to do what you need to keep yourself strong too.  You probably don't need to clean the seroma site more than a few times a day.  It may be aggravating it.  I myself developed a seroma after a bowel surgery and was instructed to clean it only twice a day. When Max had his we just laid a soft towel over it when he wasn't laying on that side.  Do you have someone who could come over and stay with pretty Ziva while you take a relaxing bath and a nap?  You'd be amazed how much better you can cope after a little take care of you time.  This journey is probably one of the hardest you'll ever take but you'll start seeing the payoff soon as beautiful Ziva and you start seeing better days here shortly!

Sounds good, I'll try to tend to cleaning it less and just patting it dry more. Unfortunately, my mom had to fly out to Arizona because my uncle is having medical issues as well, so it's just us! It'll eventually get easier, I just want that day to come!

I can't add much more than what Linda said.  The part about taking care of yourself, especially--it's like when you're on the plane and they're giving the emergency spiel at the start of the flight--you put your O2 mask on before anyone you're taking care of because YOU need to be well to take care of others.

Just letting you know we know how hard this is, and that it DOES get better!

Hugs to you and Ziva--hang in there. heart

Fallon's left front leg was amputated due to osteosarcoma on 10/11/17.
