We were woken up around 1 am by Roman having a seizure....Very Scary! It lasted a couple min.he frothed at the mouth peed himself, when it was over he was just confused and scared of us he staggered and roamed around the house for about 45 min before lying down. We slept out in the living room near where he finally settled. I got up around 4 or 5 am to go to the bathroom and he wagged his tail as I was trying to sneak by him, that told me he was fine and recognizing us again. All of it sounds standard after looking online but I dont know what caused it. He's totally normal this morning. He's never had a seizure before. He hasn't had any testing since his amputation in April . I'd like to hear some other experiences.

Seizures are very scary!

There are so many things that can cause them... and sometimes the cause is hard to diagnose.

My quad pug Tani has seizures sometimes, not too often since she has been on meds. I do have a diagnosis for her- she has hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) which causes her epilepsy. She was diagnosed at 2 years old, she is now 11.5. Hydro is a puppy problem as far as I know so probably not what is causing Roman's issues.

Roman's seizure sounds a lot like what I experience with Tani. She is usually kind of tired for a day or two after she has one.  She has been on meds for years because she was having seizures every day.

You should talk to your vet to let them know what is going on, but if he has only had one there is probably not much they can do as far as diagnosis. If he has more this weekend (why do these things always happen on the weekends?), especially if he has a few in a row, or doesn't seem to recover after one,  I would recommend going to a vet right away.

You should keep a log or journal of what he is doing daily including eating, activity- anything else.  Write down how he is acting- if you notice anything odd.  When I looked back before Tani had her first seizure she had some odd times when her balance seemed off- I thought at the time that she might have an inner ear infection. I actually had scheduled a vet appointment to check her ears, she had her first seizure the night before.

Have you changed his diet?  Could he have eaten anything weird?

Tripawd Shelby's pack mate Penny just had a couple seizures.  You can read the forum thread HERE.

Sorry I can't be more help.  You are probably worried that it could be the OSA causing it, but in my two years here I have not heard of any dog having brain cancer after amputation.

I hope this was an one time thing and he doesn't have any more.

Thank you, the thread was helpful. I will  do the journal, and call his vet on Monday.

Our Punchie (quadpawd) had seizures, which were from the advancement of Cushing's Disease. Surely unrelated to Roman's experience as Cushing's has many other symptoms.

But I thought I'd post here just to sympathize...dog seizures are a terrible thing to witness. And the aftermath is so sad, when they're confused and don't seem to recognize us.

My heart goes out to you and Roman. I hope your vet can come up with a good explanation and treatment. In the meantime, we'll be thinking of you guys.

I haven't ever experienced that with a pup so can't offer any words of advice, but just wanted to say that we will be keeping our fingers and paws crossed that your vet has some answers. That must have been so scary.

Sending pawsitive thoughts your way!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. My parents' beagle had seizures as a result of heartworm treatment combined with Cushing's Disease.  They were scary, but they were able to control them most of the time with medicine- phenobarbitol, I believe.  Fred (the Beagle) lived for a long time with his seizures before he crossed the rainbow bridge.  I want to say his seizures started when he was 5 and he crossed the bridge when he was 13.

Diagnosed with OSA: 5/2/2011 Ampuversary: 5/11/2011 OSA returned in hip: 8/26/2011
Chili Dawg crossed the Rainbow Bridge on 8/30/2011 & is now pain free. He was my heart dog, and I miss him every day.
