Hi fellow tripawd lovers,

I know most of you don't know us since we're not here very often, but for those who remember Rocky, I wanted to give you an update.

As of yesterday, Rocky is a 32 month cancer survivor! Can I get a Woot, Woot??

He's extremely happy and healthy but has had some mobility challenges that are really slowing him down. Last year at this time he was diagnosed with arthritis in his rear legs. Well, over the past year, both of his back legs have gotten progressively weaker and he seems to have a hard time controlling them individually, so he hops like a rabbit with his back legs working in unison. He continues to be able to take his morning hop around the perimeter of our yard, but for the rest of the day he pretty much just lays down and only gets up to follow me to a different room.

I took him to the vet on Friday to have him checked out and to get blood work done. The blood work came back fine, but the vet is confident that degenerative myelopathy is the cause for the lack of mobility. She explained it as the nerve cells along his spine are dying and he is loosing sensation in his legs and eventually will be unable to control them at all. His mussel tone is completely gone in both of his legs and when she tested for reflexes, found none. He was slow to right his legs when she pulled them back behind him and had to "think" about where his feet should go. She manipulated his legs and his spine and he didn't seem to have any areas that were painful to him.

It all makes sense now that I think about it. I do see him stop and "think" about how to hop down the step to go outside and his refusal to eat breakfast some mornings isn't because he's not feeling well, it's because he has a hard time standing still. Guess what buddy? You now get breakfast in bed!

It may sound weird, but I can actually deal with this diagnosis. There is some comfort in the knowledge that while I might not have a whole lot of time left with him, I do know that in his case, the cancer will not win and in the end he will not be in any pain.

Rocky is still bright eyed and happy and his vet thinks he's still doing really well. So we will just take things day by day and enjoy the time we have left together.

WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT!

Yeeeeee haw! 32 months? Holy cow! Rocky, you are indeed a champ, what pawesome news!!!! First, we need to celebrate this milestone with a big pawty. Cheesy fries and hamburgers for everypawdy!!!

Now about that DM diagnosis. That just bites, I'm sorry. But at least you are NOT in pain and your peeps know what you're dealing with. Because information is power, I think this is why your people feel so at rest with the diagnosis. What kind of treatment options, if any, did the vet provide?

Something to consider is a doggie wheel cart. This sounds like a time when a Tripawd can really benefit from one. See our blog posts about wheelchairs and tripawds for more details.

Hey Rocky and Family, it really is great to hear from you. We love stories of beating the odds, thank you for taking the time to visit. If you get a chance, we would love to see some pics of you!

Congratulations to Rocky on 32 months!!! That is just Awesome!!! Glad that you are able to deal with his diagnosis.

My Great Dane Valentina had a similar thing happen. It was only 7 months after the surgery and it came on all of a sudden. She became unable to walk at all very quickly. The vet said that she had severe spinal arthritis and that her spinal nerves were being compressed, she had 1 or 2 slipped discs and her spine was deteriorating. I don't know if his diagnosis was what he said but whatever it was it wasn't really treatable and she couldn't walk so we had to make the decision to put her to sleep on Feb 3rd.

Wishing you peace and comfort as you go through this with Rocky and so happy for you that you had the 32 months with him. That is amazing!! Way to go Rocky!!

Thanks for the woots and the kind words!

Here's a picture of Rocky at his Grandma's house after the vet. Boy, the old man is sure getting gray, isn't he?

There are no real treatment options. We're going to give him Rimadyl to see if it helps with inflammation, but will most likely go back to using Metacam due to the cost. Our goal is to is to keep him comfortable & happy.

He still has mobility, it's just limited to short bursts at a time and he's still doing really well with getting up and down from a laying position. As far as the doggie carts go, while I'm sure it is a great option for some dogs, it is not something I will be choosing for Rocky.  He's 11 1/2 now and frankly, he's getting tired. I am just so thankful that he's had such a great, long life with our family and I will be grateful for whatever time we have left together.

Congrats on 32 months! That's pawesome. He looks like a very grand old guy.

It sounds like you have a good attitude about the situation. I know you will spoil him up good for whatever time he has left. Give him an extra hug and tummy rub from me.

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. OH!  How wonderful to see Rocky again!  I have often thought of you guys.  32 months is outstanding!!!  Super Woots coming your way!

I am so sorry about this new issue.  Rocky has been so stoic all these years and I know he'll always be a trooper until the end.

For now though, we are going to celebrate in Rocky style!

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
