I am new to your forum. My eight year old golden retriever Mikey has a soft tissue tumor in his left front leg that is causing some limited range of motion but not pain. The vets (my general vet and also a board certified vet surgeon) are sure it's not osteosarcoma but maybe a soft tissue cancer. A needel biopsy was done and it was inconclusive- no cancer cells were found although because of the golden/ cancer connection. cancer is still suspected. The tumor can't be removed without amputation because too much muscle would be involved. Mikey runs, plays and walks eagerly and has an excellent quality of life so we have decided to let hin enjoy it and when the time comes we will let him go.

I know this doesn't make him a tripaw but I feel great kinship with all of you even though we have chosen a different path.

My question is – I know many of you supplement your dogs with K-9 immunity – which I have already ordered. I also ordered Resvantage a canine resveratrol supplement. Does anyone give this? I take resveratrol myself. It is not derived from grapes – which I know can be toxic. I just want to be sure that it's safe. I already feed him a grain free diet since we lost another golden to cancer two years ago.

Thanks for any advice you can give me. God bless and help us all!

Love you and all of your puppies!

Hi and welcome. I used a product called RecoverySA, which contained Reservatrol amoungst other things, on my tripawd. I also still give it to my other 2 dogs. I have not seen anything but benefit come from using it. I was concerned about my cancer dog (she was also on a grain free diet) so I called the company directly and they assured me that it would not hurt, and in fact would benefit, my cancer dog. They stated that they had many cancer dogs on it with great results. Reservatrol is recommended as a supplement for cancer dogs in some publications.

Hope that helps. If you have any questions there should be a number or website so that you can contact the company directly and ask for their input.

Tai – 9 yr old lab. Diagnosed Osteosarcoma Dec 18/09. Front right leg amputated Dec 21/09. Started chemo Jan 7/10. Lung mets discovered Sept 16/10. Valiant to the end on Oct 26/10 when cancer reappeared in a leg and we made the decision to set her free. Forever in my heart where not even cancer can take her from me.

Hi Joanne,

Thanks for joining us. You are more than welcome to participate and share Mikey's story with us. Amputation isn't right for every dog, we're all about supporting eachother no matter which paths our journeys may take us.

Good question about Resvantage. We have heard a little about it for humans, but not for dogs. Here's a good post by Dr. Demian Dressler, author of the Dog Cancer Survival Handbook, which we highly recommend checking out. His advice is always spot-on. Here's what he says about it:

"The Premautre Frenzy: Resveratrol"

"Granted, resveratrol is very interesting.  And the anti cancer effects of resveratrol are quite interesting too…but mainly in test tubes and petri dishes.

So, resveratrol has potential merit in real life dogs with real life cancers.  Just not quite yet, in my opinion."

We suggest talking to a holistic veterinarian about safety factors to see what they think. Let us know if you do OK?

Meanwhile, welcome. If there is anything we can do to make your journey easier, please let us know OK?
