My 9-year old Bengal male had his right rear leg amputated 5 weeks ago after an aggressive tumor growth.
He initially did well after surgery (healed well, was getting around well on 3 legs, using litter boxes on two different floors of the house, eating well); this week his activity declined tremendously. He is having bathroom accidents. His remaining rear leg seems swollen (edema?) and he is not grooming himself. Appetite is down.
he sees the surgical vet tomorrow but has anyone had this experience, where their pet did well post-surgery but then declined?
Simba is not on any meds. He was given gabapentin before and 1 week after surgery but then we stopped it because he seemed to be doing well (until this week…).
thanks
Awww poor kitty! Sounds like Simba may have pulled a muscle and injured himself somehow, which is not at all uncommon. Many new Tripawds overdo it at first. They think they're invincible and we forget they aren't (I know, it happened to us too!). When their bodies and brains catch up to each other, whammo! We see it all the time. Usually with R&R and pain control they recover well. He may need more pain management than it initially seemed. Let your surgeon know what's going on. Have a list of his symptoms with you, and insist on going home with pain control. Gabapentin is good as long as you are consistent and continue as prescribed.
If that doesn't help, a visit with an animal rehabilitation therapist may be in order. The Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit so no worries, we've got your back!
Let us know how the vet visit goes.

Sorry your cat has hit a bump in the road. As Jerry said, it's unusual at all to tweak a muscle.
Glad you're getting him checked out with a Vet tomorrow The potty accidents, not eating and swollen leg could indicate some urinary/kidney issues that are separate from any amputation issue. The Bet will check Simba out thoroughly and come up with a plan to get him back on track.
Let us know what the Vet says, okay? And give Simba some ear scratches for us.
