Hello there!
We are new to the Tripawds community. Our 12-year old beagle, Henry, had his right back leg amputated on Tuesday due to mast cell cancer cells in his paw and lymph node in the right leg. Recovery has been slow, but apparently not unusual from what I have read. He doesn't get up on his own much, unless it is to switch positions. When we help him up to go outside to the bathroom, he has been slow but wants to move on his own. His appetite isn't back (he's never had a typical beagle appetite), but today he was really liking ricotta cheese and ate some milkbones.
My concern is that today I noticed swelling in his right front leg in the forearm. It is a bit over an inch bigger around than his other forearm. The swelling is just above where the catheter was placed for his surgery. It doesn't seem red or painful to the touch. Perhaps it was swollen before today and I didn't notice, but I really don't think so.
Has anyone else had this happen to their dog? My biggest worry is that we didn't catch cancer in other areas before his surgery and suddenly it has metastasized.
I would appreciate any insight!
Thank you!
Susie

Welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I'm sorry cancer has brought you here, but there is lots of information and support to be found here. My pug Maggie lost her left rear leg to mast cell, there are links to her story in my signature below.

I didn't deal with swelling I other legs, but I know other members have discussed it- hopefully you will here from them soon. And don't hesitate to call your vet if you are concerned. Maggie was a slug for about 6 weeks after surgery- way longer than most here. She was not an adaptable pug, she hated changes to her routine. But she did get back to herself and she hopped happily through life for almost 4 years.

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.
