Ranee is a beautiful 4 year old red and tan Doberman Pincher. She is energetic, intelligent, strong, and very gentle with children. Ranee is by far, the strongest Doberman (male or female) we ever owned. In August 2011, after a week of boarding, I noticed a small hard lump on her rear left leg between the tarsus and tibia. We assumed she hurt herself in the kennel, so we took her to the veterinarian for an x-ray. Unfortunately, the x-ray indicated she had a bone tumor. Approximately 90% of bone tumor cases are osteosarcoma with a prognosis median of 1 year to live, with or without treatment. We had a biopsy done which came back inconclusive. Without any concrete answer to what kind of tumor it was, and taking into account the bleak prognosis, we decided to let Ranee be while booking an appointment with a specialist.

The tumor continued to grow at a steady rate, roughly doubling in size every month. Ranee has been on Metacam (pain killer and anti-inflammatory) so she is her normal active self, but tends not to put any weight on her leg, lifting it up when standing still. The specialist ran new tests in December, and surprisingly, Ranee's lungs remain clear with no visible sign of disease spread. There might be a chance that the tumor is osteochondroma, a benign tumor that doesn't spread and can be cured with amputation. It would be nice if that's the truth, but regardless, the leg has to be removed because the tumor will continue to grow until her leg breaks and she is in more pain then her current medication can subside. So in January 2012, Ranee will official become a tripawd. This is a new experience for us and I want to document it for myself and other pet owners who find themselves in this unfortunate situation.

I will update Ranee's blog with before-op, post-op, and recovery photos.

Welcome to our Tripawd family. I'm sorry to had to join, but as Micki said - we are all here to support each other. Since Ranee is only 4, she should do very well with the amputation. It's amazing how quickly pups can adapt to 3 paws.

Please keep us posted on your journey, and ask questions. We are here to support you...and to entertain (you'll soon find out what I mean).

Sending you many golden hugs,

Cathy

Oh poor pup, we are so sorry! We hope the cancer is benign and you can go on living life without thinking about chemo. What day is her surgery?

Her strength will be a plus as you walk your Tripawd journey together. Follow her lead and you can't go wrong.

Thank you so much for joining us here, we're ready to help however we can. And now that you're sharing her story in a Tripawds Dog Blog, you are in turn helping future pawrents who visit here.

Good luck, let us know if we can do anything to help OK?

Welcome to the site! I have two Dobermans. They are such sweet dogs. We wish you the best on your journey!

Levi was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-7-11
Ampuversary 10-14-11
Lung Mets Discovered 1-4-12. Chemo seemed to not be working so we switched to Artemisinin and other supplements. In May, Levi developed a sinus infection and started having seizures. The cancer had moved to his brain. We let him go 6-26-12.

Welcome!  I joined this site one month ago when Zeus was diagnosed and had amputation surgery.  The members here have a WEALTH of information and, as you will discover, are very compassionate and supportive.  I am sorry for Ranee's illness.  Good luck on this journey!

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Welcome to the site no one wants to join but everyone is glad they did. There is a wealth of info here in our collective heads. Going through all this can be overwhelming and scary, but you are not alone.

Please be sure to post in the forums if you have questions during her recovery, or if you just need some support.

Soon you will see how awesome it is to be a tripawd pawrent. Welcome to the club.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Welcome and Ranee and family!

So sorry that Ranee has bone cancer!  She is too young for this nasty disease!

It sounds like you have armed yourself with a lot of information and know what to expect, which is great!  But just know, we are here.  It's a very trying experience at first.

Keep us posted!
