Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have any experience or information regarding the above mentioned chinese herb that is about to be approved by the FDA?  They say it has been in use for thousands of years and has been a main component when fighting malaria but is now about to be introduced in to the American market after the successful research done by two prominent scientists/researchers at the University of Washington.  Has anyone tried it?  If so, to what degree and success?  I have a dog that is now 2 months removed from Osteosarcoma and had to have his hind leg removed.  He is 3 years old and after the bone biopsy it was concluded the cancer was low level.  I have elected to bypass on chemo and radiation because I strongly feel the side effects would pose another set of problems altogether that would be detrimental to his quality of life.  I would appreciate any feedback if possible.

Yep - I do know some stuff about artemisinin . (In fact, I'm writing a post about it for the Nutrition blog here on Tripawds. Was hoping to finish it and send it off to Jerry tomorrow or Wed for editing/approval/posting.) We had Abby on it for about the last 1/2 of her time with OSA. (We waited to start her on it until she was done w/ her IV chemo and the Palladia we tried with her.)

I didn't know the FDA was going to approve it as a cancer "drug." (I wonder if that means someone is going to make tons of money off it??) Anyway, yes, it's been around for ages in China for treating malaria, so is known to be very low in toxicity because people have been taking it for years and years. I don't know much about how it goes about fighting cancer, but it's something to do with attacking iron. I don't know - I'd have to look that part up again. I know you can currently get in online (from Hepalin.com for Artemix - a blend of artesunate, artemisinin & artemether, which is thought to maybe be more effective than just the straight arte, or from Holley Pharmaceuticals for straight artemisinin ). Those are the recommended sellers per Dr. Singh from UoW (one of the "2 prominent scientists" you refer to above).

I know a bit about how to dose it, if you are interested. It can be a bit tricky to dose as it has to be given away from meals (because of the way it attacks iron). The dosing instructions are pretty detailed. I'll put them in the blog post I'm working on, but in the meantime, PM if you want the info right away and I'll send it to you.

Did you see an article or something about it getting FDA approval? I'd be interested to read it.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

Yes, some of our dogs have used it for different lengths of time. If you search the tripawd archives you should be able to find quite a few details. My dog, Tazzie, and Pam the vet's dog - also named Tazzie (username = tazziedog) - took it. On the bright side, I don't think it tends to conflict with other drugs your dog might take, although it seems it is recommended to avoid certain foods at the time of day when you give it. The Tazzie's were around in 2008 so try to search archives, although I have noticed other dogs trying it since. My dog probably had mets before we started it so I can't say it got a fair chance. Pam's dog was around for longer (she lived 1 yr post amp).

There is an Artemesinin website for dogs with cancer. I don't think it is quite the miracle drug they make it out to be. When our Tazzie's were around, it was shown to have some success fighting cancer in a petri dish but have not been demonstrated beyond that. Interesting if it has been taken further.
