I'm wondering if anyone has had this problem we're having .. Kali's doing well with her recovery but here is the post I had put up in my blog:

So, a couple days ago for the first time ever since Kali was a puppy
.. she peed on the kitchen floor. We always try to get her to go
outside  from time to time .. and most of the time she doesn't want to
go out. Usually all she does, is goes by the sliding door &
scratches at it to tell us that she wants to go out. I'm thinking maybe
since she got her amputation, she's not able to do this anymore?

Then yesterday, she did the same thing.. once in the kitchen,  in the
hallway, & on her blanket. I'm really not sure what's going on? We
do manage to get her out sometimes & she goes #2 just fine. She's
eating twice a day & has water at all times. It's been 9 days post
amp & she gets up fine & acts like she's okay.

Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this or if it's something I should be worried about?

Hello,

Of course you want to rule out any medical issues- is she on any meds that might make her drink more and then need to pee more??  How old is she? If I remember she is around 11?  Maggie developed incontinence around 11 years old. The incontinence was easily controlled in our case with a drug called Proin. Mag stopped having accidents the day she started on it.  Dr. Pam I think had some concerns or there were some potential side effects, I don't remember.  In Mag's case I knew we were not talking long term so I didn't worry about it.

If it is not a medical issue maybe it is a behavior thing.  My house is single story, with only a couple of stairs off the deck.  My parent's house is split level with lots of stairs.  Maggie had trouble going up stairs because she was so small and a rear amp, she could go down anything. She had doggie doors at both houses and ALWAYS went out to do her business- even in the rain.  Shortly after her amp she decided that she wouldn't go outside at my parents house because she couldn't get back up the stairs by herself.  She peed in their house several times. We had to revert to taking her out several times a day and that solved the problem.  She never peed in my house until she became incontinent.

And you may be right that she can't scratch at the door- but it seems like she would still go over to it.  Maybe you can hang a bell and train her to touch it with her nose- I know people who do that with their pups.

Good luck!

Karen's definitely the one to talk to about urinary issues/incontinence. It's very common for girldogs to experience this, especially as they age. Kali's issue definitely sounds like that could be it. I would definitely take her in, it could be something as simple as taking Proin to stop it.

Is Kali still on any opioid or narcotic pain medications? In human medicine, both can cause temporary incontinence, particularly if there have been constipation issues ( due to sphincter relaxation after straining). The effects are transient & usually resolve when medication use is discontinued. It's usually in the older, female population. Isabelle did not have a problem after her amputation, but had some minor urine leaking after her recent surgery when we got home. I took off her fentanyl patch, & it resolved immediately.

Hi Kali's people,

I think it would be a good idea to ask your vet.  Because she has recently developed this after her operation my questions would be is she a rear amp?  Is she still on meds?

Maybe it is challenging for her to get up and get outside?  I think getting a medical opinion would be a good idea..  I wish I could be of more help 🙁

Everyone else has pretty much given you good advice regarding asking your vet; thought I would chime in about scratching at the back door though.

Chloe is a rear amp and after a month or so, she was able to take down our sliding screen door to our backyard. Not sure if yours will be able to if she is a front amp, but trust me they figure a new way out. I was annoyed that Chloe did this, but it made me realize she can do more than I realize.... so hopefully you get this pee thing figured out and you have a smooth rest of the recovery!

Chloe became a rear amp tripawd on 7-29-10. Another tumor was removed on front leg 2-20-14. Found 3rd tumor on neck 2-2015, but she's still kicking cancer's butt at age 14. Chloe's blog
