Hello everyone. I am wanting some advice from anyone that has used this in home chemo drug. We are concerned because everything we read it says avoid contact with feces, urine and saliva. Well, the last one is our only concern. Our girl is a bullmastiff and she slobbers. We also have another dog that shares a water bucket with Carly. Now, when she was on the Carboplatin, it was intravenous and done at the vet, so we never had any issues with that. This is a pill she gets at home every other day. We are also worried how she will react to this chemo treatment. We do not want to make her feel bad because she is tolerating the disease okay at the moment. She has Osteosarcoma, front right leg amputated, and had a round of Carboplatin first. Vet noticed a 1 cm spot on her left lung, so wanted to start her on a different treatment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there gorgeous girl and familyheart

My girl Eurydice also did carboplatin and then moved on to metronomics for over one month.

This comprised one chemo pill, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory given orally every day.

I don't know the drug you mention, Eurydice's chemo pill was called differently.

In any case, I was told to wear surgical gloves when administering her daily pill but no instructions were given concerning her body fluids.

When she was on carboplatin I was told to wash my hands after handling poop/pee.

Sorry I cannot be of help ...

Could you maybe post in the ask a vet forum ?

Sending you and your girl a big hug and many, many cuddles heart

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

Thank you! I didn't know there was an ask the vet forum. I definitely will! Is it weird that they do not have her on an antibiotic too. I'm seeing a lot of that.

Have you seen the thread we started about Jerry's metronomics experience? Click the link for details. He handled it beautifully. Some dogs will get bladder irritation, so to reduce the risk of cystitis, the thinking is that you want to give it early in the AM and make sure they urinate it out asap.

Saw that you posted in Ask a Vet. I'm not sure when Dr. Pam will see that but hopefully soon. I believe her mastiff Tazzie was on cytoxan (chlorambucil) as well.

When it comes to the antibiotic, I believe that the most recent thinking among oncologists is that it didn't show the anti-tumor properties that they had originally hoped it had. Many oncos are pulling back from that drug.

It's also my understanding that the cytoxan moves through the body pretty quickly and comes out with the first urination after the pill is given, making slobber not as radioactive as it is with traditional IV chemo. But precautions are typically the same if other pets and pregnant women are in the house. These Forum Posts mention it I believe.
