Penny was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma and is twelve weeks post amp. When we went in for the 4th & final carboplatin this week, the x-ray showed two spots on the lungs. The radiologist and vet said that they do not look like typical lung mets but they are not sure what those darn things are. Has anyone else had mystery spots show up on x-rays as well? If so, did they ultimately end up being mets?

I don't have any experience on the subject, but wanted to say we are sending you lots of wishes for NO mets. I'm sure someone here will have some insight for you.

Good luck!

Did they say what it was about them that was atypical?

When we were half way through our 6 carboplatin treatments, we had an xray show a single tiny spot. The onc said it was not typical to have just one spot - he said you would normally see a bunch. But he still thought it was the beginnings of a met. The radiologist said she didn't think it was a met. So we continued w/ the carbo and waited. It did in fact turn out to be a met when we checked again in 3 months time, so after the IV chemo ended, we went on at-home chemo (metronomic protocol).

I hope it is NOT the beginning of mets and is something else. I don't want our story to scare you - but just wanted you to know that Abby's mets never acted "typical" until the very end. (She only had 3 mets at the end - which is really not normal.) We had more than a year (a very active, very great year) with the lung met(s).

What did the onc say in terms of follow up?

If you have any questions about what we did with Abby, you can always PM me. Doing the No Mets dance in your beautiful Penny's honor!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. How old is Penny?  I recall watching a video from an oncologist who mentioned that older dogs typically have changes to their lungs and that sometimes it is hard to tell from x-rays whether it is just normal "aging" lung changes or if it is mets developing.  I will try to find the link to the video and post it.

Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11.  A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Hi Penny and family.

I wish I could help, but I don't have anything to add. I would have to say that I agree with the feedback so far...it can go either way. Most times, we just have to play it by ear and wait and see. In the meantime, live each day to the fullest and remember that nothing is set in stone.

If they are mets, they can occasionally go away! That sometimes happens. Or they can get larger 🙁 Cancer is just one of those things that will do what it does, but it makes us appreciate each and every moment that we have.

Whatever happens, we are here for you every step of the way. xoxo
